Description

Serves as the primary resource and consultant for students regarding all aspects of their educational development, and academic growth. Offer individual and group level support to medical students on topics such as goal setting, time and task management, active learning techniques, test taking strategies and study techniques. A significant portion of time will be dedicated to providing academic support for students in preparation for medical licensure examinations. Monitors and assists in guiding student progress, provides referrals to other university department or outside agencies for services, and engages students as necessary to meet their individual needs. Ensures that students are provided information and accessibility to university resources and programs that will assist them in being successful during their education/experience. These employees work under general supervision.


Examples of Duties

  1. Create and provide programs aimed at enhancing student retention and academic achievement across the medical school curriculum, including support for USMLE exam preparation.
  2. Assist students in preparing for USMLE examinations by providing guidance and resources tailored to individual needs.
  3. Develop personalized action plans for students to reach their academic goals, career aspirations, and personal development; provides guidance on course requirements within an academic department or division.
  4. Develop and maintain a comprehensive program for identifying and supporting academically at-risk students.
  5. Collaborate with other academic strategists to share best practices and resources, fostering a supportive network.
  6. Provides referral services for students to appropriate campus resources for assistance, study skills, tutoring, counseling, accommodations, etc.
  7. Work with students to identify learning needs, strengths, and weaknesses and develop individual academic learning plans to support student success.
  8. Attend various educational activities such as classes, seminars and tutorials, to gain exposure to current medical education content and methodology.
  9. Review course materials to enhance student support and ensure students have access to the necessary information and university resources that will help them succeed throughout their medical school journey.
  10. Maintain student records in compliance with FERPA and keep accurate documentation of session, meetings and other communication as appropriate.
  11. Engage in important educational committees to ensure alignment of academic strategies with curriculum objectives, track and address student performance concerns, and actively participate in conversations about student accommodations and inclusivity.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Master's Degree in Education or Social Sciences.
  2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in coaching students in an academic setting.
  3. Preference given to applicants with experience in academic learning strategies or basic science topics, i.e. biochemistry, physiology, pathology, etc.

*Master degree, additional education, training and/or work experience in a distinct academic discipline or area of specialization may be designated by the Employer. Such designations must be directly linked to the specific position description and requirements.
