Come join our GTE Financial team! We are looking for a highly detailed, proactive professional as a Consumer Loan Underwriter I. This person will be responsible for quality underwriting of all consumer loans, while providing exceptional service to applicants, coworkers, and dealer partners. Our consumer loan underwriters analyze loan information and utilize critical thinking skills to make sound lending decisions. The consumer loan underwriter I will maintain or exceed individual, department, and credit union production goals as established by leadership. In addition, he/she will increase their level of lending authority to Level 4 through a series of on-the-job coaching, training, and development. What does GTE look for in a Consumer Loan Underwriter? Underwriting:
- Responsible for making quality credit decisions for direct and indirect lending in a centralized lending environment
- Analyze credit information to determine risk associated with loan applications and apply critical thinking to ensure sound decisions
- Thorough knowledge in credit and risk analysis, underwriting, administration, policy and procedure.
- Consistently prepare loan recommendations for decisions requiring higher lending authority
- Accountable for managing loan queues to ensure decisions are made in a timely manner.
- Ability to operate and analyze data obtained from outside third-party vendors including:
- Equifax,
- Lexis Nexis,
- County Property Appraisers,
- Carfax
- DMV websites
- Maintain a loan portfolio balance and parameters specific to yield, delinquency and charge off as established by leadership
- Must be able to successfully obtain and progress from level 1 to level 4 lending authority
- Works with Underwriter II and Supervisory staff to build necessary skill sets and experience as an Underwriter I
Experience:
- Effective verbal communication and writing/documentation skills both internally and externally
- Ability to effectively communicate with internal/external auditors including NCUA/CFPB examiners and other audit firms and/or government agencies
Operational Support:
- Abides by all credit union policies, procedures, and protocols set forth in the departmental, GTE Financial employee, operational and administrative policy manuals.
- Must demonstrate a functional knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act in addition to other Federal laws, including but not limited to U.S. Patriot Act, Office of Foreign Assets & Control, Anti-Money Laundering, Right to Financial Privacy Act, and the Bank Bribery Act.
- Possess working knowledge of internal fraud processes and works effectively to prevent loan losses
- Proficient computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office applications.
- Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish).
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent. Some college preferred.
- Minimum 1-3 years of work experience in loan underwriting or a related field or combination of education and experience.
Position Details:
- Location: Downtown Tampa - GTE Headquarters
- Department Hours: Monday - Saturday (8:00 am to 7:00 pm) // Sunday (9:00 am to 6:00 pm)
Full-time hours required, with additional hours necessary to accomplish objectives, goals, and projects. The position is defined as hybrid in nature, (in-office, or remote) and may be changed at any time by management with appropriate notice, if possible. Required for Remote/Hybrid Work:

- Some positions will require performance standards to be met to qualify for alternative work arrangements.
- Required to have power and high-speed internet over 100MB (minimum).
- Video capability (connection of 1.5 Mbps up and down recommended).
- Candidates must provide and meet all technical requirements prior to the first day of training.
- Hybrid candidates must live within driving distance of the office location and be able to regularly commute to and from the office location as needed.
