What does the job involve?

Summary: The Design Engineer shall be responsible for entry level to intermediate level engineering tasks related to New Product Development Programs to customer technical requirements and procurement specifications. At the discretion of the Engineering Manager, Project Engineer, or Engineering lead, the candidate may be involved in all phases of New Product Development including technical proposals, preliminary to detailed design of customer Line Replacement Units (LRUs), development part fabrication technical support, qualification / certification testing thru Entry-into-Service (EIS), sustaining engineering efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to:



  • Execute well defined project subtasks within the internal IPDT (Integrated Product Development Team; i.e. design engineers, design drafters, manufacturing engineering, test lab technicians, program managers, etc.) of New Product Development programs.
  • To support detail design of products, the Design Engineer tasks would include, but are not limited to:

    • Stress analysis
    • Pressure drop analysis
    • Thermal analysis
    • Creation of engineering documentation (such as analysis reports and test procedures)
    • Monitoring testing
    • Executing development and certification efforts


  • Additional objectives for the Design Engineer position would be to support:

    • The creation of production drawings
    • Design review presentations
    • Supplier requests for engineering clarification on design requirements
    • Follow all Senior policies and procedures.
    • Other duties with the work as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 0 - 5+ years of experience as an analyst or support engineer in product design and development, preferably in the aerospace industry.
  • Experience with thermal analysis, pressure drop analysis, and basic hand calculation analysis for structural components such as bracketry.
  • Experience writing certification documentation, such as: ATP, QTP, QTR, etc.
  • Experience supporting design program Milestones such as: PDR (Preliminary Design Review) and CDR (Critical Design Review)
  • Preferred experience in metallic or composite ducting and motion compensator design per ARP 699 guidelines.
  • Preferred experience with analysis tools such as FEA / FEM tools MSC NASTRAN / PATRAN, ANSYS, ATA NASTRAN / FEMAP
  • Preferred understanding of industry specifications, such as MIL, AN, MS, NAS, ASTM, AMS, etc.
  • Preferred experience with CAD software (CATIA V5 or Solidworks)
  • Preferred test experience per RTCA-DO/190 or MIL-STD-810 (vibration and environmental tests)
  • Preferred test experience with LabVIEW data acquisition / control VIs.


Required Skills:



  • Language: Ability to read / support the creation of 3D models and 2D drawings with dimensioning and tolerance per ANSI/ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to effectively work with engineering peers to resolve complex problems.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Other Abilities: The Design Engineer understands their function and role within the IPDT, and is able to obtain and provide information (facts, practices, policies, etc.) to others within the IPDT. The candidate shall be able to effectively multi-task and quickly change from one task to the next and back. The candidate must be detail oriented, and able to work quickly and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
