Job Duties:
This position will be the Director of the Wisconsin Centers for Nanoscale Technology (WCNT), which includes the Nanoscale Fabrication Center (NFC), the Soft Materials Characterization Laboratory (SMCL), and the Nanoscale Imaging and Analysis Center (NIAC). The centers support a broad range of research across UW-Madison by students, staff, faculty, and by external academic and industry users. The center director works with faculty, staff, and the CoE Dean's office to develop and maintain the strategic plan for the facilities, equipment, and staffing of the WCNT. The WCNT director reports to the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering and is responsible for all aspects of managing the WCNT.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Develops effective policies and institutional agreements in alignment with university goals
- Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
- Builds a sustained constituency of internal and external stakeholders
- Supervises research operations and personnel to ensure compliance and efficiencies
- Serves as the principal liaison between the program, university leadership, and outside entities
- Formulates and implements program strategies, plans, and goals for a research unit
- Develops and executes budgets and costing strategies for products/services in compliance with university and state policies

Compensation:
The starting salary for this position is $115,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience using advanced characterization tools and/or micro-fabrication technologies with experience in one or more of the following areas: high-resolution metrology instrumentation, soft materials instrumentation, materials fabrication and characterization, micro/nanoscale device fabrication, and semiconductor fabrication. Ten years of experience post BS degree, 8 years of experience post MS degree, or 5 years of experience post PhD working in scientific and research environments, including the private sector, national laboratories, and/or higher education, with a focus on one or more of the following areas: high-resolution metrology instrumentation, soft materials instrumentation, materials fabrication and characterization, micro/nanoscale device fabrication, and semiconductor fabrication.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least two-years of experience managing personnel Experience managing complex budgets Excellent communication skills, written and verbal Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups and stakeholders Experience in maintenance and operations of instrumentation and facilities for high-resolution metrology instrumentation, soft materials instrumentation, materials fabrication and characterization, micro/nanoscale device fabrication, and semiconductor fabrication. Experience in proposal development and writing Experience working as a staff member in a shared use research facility Experience managing a shared use research facility
Education:
Required bachelor's degree in engineering, the physical sciences, or an interdisciplinary program focused on micro/nano device fabrication Preferred master's degree or Ph.D. degree in engineering, the physical sciences, or an interdisciplinary program focused on micro/nano device fabrication
