What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Waste Management and Pollution Prevention Department (4736) has an opening for a Nuclear Analysis Engineer to join the team. Various duties you will be responsible for include but are not limited to:



  • Evaluating radiological characterization data for on-site management and off-site disposal of radioactive and mixed waste.

  • Developing waste profiles for waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities.

  • Providing characterization support for off-site low-level radioactive and mixed waste shipments.

  • Providing guidance on radiological work practices and radiation safety issues.

  • Supporting audits and assessments, and assisting in the development and implementation of corrective actions associated with identified non-conformances.

  • Interacting with Department of Energy (DOE) personnel and Sandia upper management concerning radiological facilities.

  • Assisting with development and review of program documents



Other duties may include:



  • Radiological Source Custodian for Department-held sealed sources

  • Open Container Program Leader for waste treatment/sorting

  • Alternate Waste Certification Official (WCO)

  • Establishing and Maintaining a Radiography Program for Waste Certification

  • Ensuring that Sandia National Laboratories practices comply with permissible standards and the As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) philosophy.

  • Developing and directing radiation training and monitoring programs



Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline, plus five or more years of relevant work experience; or a Master's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a STEM discipline plus one or more years of relevant experience

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q security clearance



Qualifications We Desire:



  • Professional certifications such as, Certified Health Physicist (CHP)

  • Ability to maintain and update complex MS Excel worksheets

  • Good understanding of radiological analysis practices and results interpretation

  • Experience as an operational Health Physicist working in the field

  • Project management experience, including leading teams

  • Familiarity with US DOE orders, guides, manuals and/or standards such as:

  • Experience with operations involving a high level of oversight and a dynamic job structure.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to perform effectively in a diverse teaming environment.



About Our Team:

The Waste Management and Pollution Prevention Department provides cost-effective disposal options for radioactive waste and excess nuclear materials. The department operates several facilities and functions through a multidisciplinary project team and a performance-based contract. The activities are highly regulated, as radiological activities may involve hazardous waste, classified information and material, and accountable fissile materials. The department's objective is to reduce the legacy inventories of radioactive waste and materials while supporting the ongoing needs of the laboratories.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
