Job Description AAMC Workforce Studies Research Fellow position (part-time) is available to a graduate student in social science or a medical residency fulfilling their research requirements. The fellowship runs from September to June. The AAMC Workforce Studies fellow will function as a member of the Workforce Studies team at the AAMC while engaging in research projects that are aligned with the strategic goals and priorities of the AAMC and the Workforce Studies team. The Fellow will work on one or more research projects (see topic areas below) under the supervision of senior members of the AAMC Workforce Studies team and other AAMC staff as appropriate. The fellowship is expected to result in at least one published product, co-authored with members of the Workforce Studies team. Before concluding their fellowship, the fellow may be required to make an in-house presentation of their work, open to AAMC staff. We will consider candidates who reside outside the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area (but limited to the United States' contiguous 48 states). The Fellow can work in the AAMC office or remotely. However, we have no funds available for travel and accommodation subsidies. About the Workforce Studies Team at AAMC The mission of the AAMC Workforce Studies team is to be the pre-eminent resource for physician workforce projections, data, and research, providing support and value to AAMC and AAMC's members and leadership to the health workforce research community. Examples of publications led by previous fellows include: Physician Engagement in Addressing Health-Related Social Needs and Burnout Do physicians with academic affiliation have lower burnout and higher career-related satisfaction? What to Expect During the Fellowship? The Fellow will work with Workforce Studies staff to select research and data analysis projects based on their background and interest, though other topics may also be considered if they align with existing research priorities. Possible research topics include: Physician retirement and attrition Physician practice location Physician work hours and work patterns Access to care and population health The Fellow's work may include: Data cleaning and management Literature review(s) Under supervision, conducting statistical analysis and production of tables, graphs, and other visualizations, preparing slides for presentations, and writing and revising drafts of papers and other publications. Providing other research and data analysis support to the Workforce Studies team as appropriate Attendance at relevant seminars, symposia, and internal AAMC meetings The Fellow will use AAMC data, either alone or in combination with other data sources. Key AAMC Workforce datasets that candidates may use for their research during the fellowship include: National Sample Survey of Physicians (NSSP) data 2019 and 2022 (two waves, longitudinal survey that contains information on 6000 physicians' demographics, family structure, work patterns, retirement plans, location, debt, burnout, harassment, income, etc.) AMA Physician Data (includes individual physician records from 2004 to the current year, with variables such as location and essential demographic and practice characteristics) AAMC Consumer Survey of Health Care Access (an AAMC-collected and maintained, nationally representative, repeated cross-sectional survey of medical care access) Qualifications Currently enrolled in a degree-granting, graduate-level education program in public health, economics, public policy, or other social science fields, or a medical resident with graduate-level training in social science fields Strong interest in improving health care service in the United States Experience in analyzing survey data Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Proficiency with statistical software such as Stata, SAS, R, or equivalent Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of maintaining accuracy and impartiality in all work products Ability to work independently Capability for teleworking, if chosen Strong motivation to build a publication portfolio in physician workforce research Experience with longitudinal data analysis is a plus Spatial analysis skills are a plus This is a part-time position requiring 20 hours of work per week. Fellows can receive academic credit from their home institution or be paid at an hourly rate of $23 per hour Fellows will have access to a workspace, a laptop computer with the necessary software programs, and related AAMC datasets as appropriate. If a bachelor's degree is required, related work experience may be substituted in some positions. One year of college course work at an accredited institution is equivalent to one year of related work experience.
