THE POSITION

Washington County's Department of Facilities, Fleet, and Parks is looking for a Part-Time Groundskeeper to help create safe, welcoming, and comfortable public spaces to serve the diverse staff, citizens, and visitors of Washington County. The Facilities Division takes great pride in the planning, construction, maintenance, and repair of nearly 45 County-owned buildings (over 1.8 million square feet), grounds, parks, and associated hardscape.

The part-time Groundskeeper makes and maintains improvements to the grounds and parks supported by Washington County. This includes maintaining the grounds for numerous downtown core facilities such as the County Courthouse Complex, Public Services Building, Law Enforcement Center, as well as several remote locations. Supervision is not a responsibility for staff assigned to this classification. Incumbents may lead volunteers, community service, interns, temporary workers or similar work-related groups.

The ideal candidate for this position will be committed to contributing to an inclusive and safe space for everyone within and interacting with the Facilities, Fleet & Parks Department, we are looking for an energetic Groundskeeper for 3 days per week with a passion for public service, an eye for detail, a strong work ethic with the ability to multi-task and adapt to reactive and emergency situations, demonstrate good communication skills, and have consistent attendance. Successful candidates will be familiar with lawn and garden equipment and tools, fertilizer and pesticide handling, mixing, equipment calibration, and usage, general plant health and maintenance requirements, irrigation systems operation, maintenance, improvements, and repair, general landscaping maintenance; and hardscape maintenance practices and materials required to make repairs. Successful candidate should also be able to shift priorities to respond to urgent work requests with pride, professionalism, and a positive demeanor. Successful candidate needs to be a team player.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent; AND
  • Three (3) or more years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape maintenance, parks maintenance, golf course maintenance, plant nursery work, or related fields.

Additional Requirements

  • Must possess a driver's license valid in the State of Oregon and have an acceptable driving record per Washington County policy. To review Washington County's Driver's License and Record Policy: Driver's License & Records Policy (Vehicles - Section 800).
  • Some positions in this classification may require ability to obtain, within six (6) months of appointment, a Public Pesticide Applicator's License required by the State of Oregon, Department of Agriculture for Ornamental and Turf pesticide applications.
  • Some positions in this classification may require ability to obtain within one (1) year, a Certified Playground Safety Inspector certification issued by the National Recreation and Park Association.
