Director, AI Governance

The Director of AI Governance is a critical leadership role responsible for establishing and overseeing the company's AI governance framework. This individual will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, procedures, and controls to ensure the ethical, responsible, and compliant use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies across the organization. The Director will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including AI/ML engineers, data scientists, legal, compliance, risk, and business stakeholders, to promote transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI systems.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Develop and Implement AI Governance Framework: Design, develop, and implement a comprehensive AI governance framework that aligns with industry best practices, ethical principles, and relevant regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, emerging AI regulations).
  • Policy and Procedure Development: Create and maintain AI-related policies, standards, and procedures covering areas such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, transparency, explainability, security, and risk management.
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Conduct regular risk assessments of AI systems to identify potential ethical, legal, and reputational risks. Develop and implement mitigation strategies to address identified risks.
  • Compliance Monitoring: Monitor AI systems for compliance with internal policies, external regulations, and ethical guidelines. Establish mechanisms for ongoing monitoring and auditing of AI systems.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with cross-functional teams (AI/ML, Data Science, Legal, Compliance, Risk, Business) to ensure alignment on AI governance principles and practices.
  • Training and Awareness: Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees on AI governance policies, ethical considerations, and responsible AI practices.
  • Incident Response: Develop and implement an incident response plan for addressing AI-related incidents, such as data breaches, algorithmic bias issues, or ethical violations.
  • Transparency and Explainability: Promote transparency and explainability in AI systems by establishing guidelines for documenting AI models, data sources, and decision-making processes.
  • External Engagement: Monitor and engage with external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, industry groups, and academic institutions, to stay informed of emerging AI governance trends and best practices.
  • Performance Measurement: Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of the AI governance framework and identify areas for improvement.
  • Team Leadership: Build and lead a team of AI governance professionals (depending on the size and scope of the organization).
  • AI Ethics Review Board Support: Support the creation and operations of an AI Ethics Review Board or similar body that oversees the ethical implications of AI development and deployment.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Law, Computer Science, Data Science, Ethics, Public Policy). Advanced degree (JD, Master's, or PhD) preferred.
  • Experience:
    • [Number, e.g., 7-10+] years of experience in a related field, such as AI governance, data governance, compliance, risk management, or legal.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing governance frameworks, policies, and procedures.
    • Experience working with AI/ML technologies and understanding of AI-related risks and ethical considerations.
    • Experience with relevant regulations and standards (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, NIST AI Risk Management Framework).
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of AI technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision.
    • Deep knowledge of AI ethics principles, responsible AI practices, and AI governance frameworks.
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and influence stakeholders at all levels.
    • Project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
    • Strong understanding of data privacy principles and regulations.
