Ever-Green Energy is looking for a team member to perform accurate underground infrastructure locating by protecting underground utilities from damage during projects involving excavation, trenching and directional drilling. There are other various types of assigned tasks that include manual labor, semi-skilled, or skilled work in the operation and maintenance relating to District Energy St. Paul's thermal distribution systems.

Minimum requirements to be successful in this role:

  • High school Diploma or equivalent experience in math, written communications, electricity, piping systems, and utility construction.
  • Experience in communicating with contractors, vendors and customers, working with engineering information, and in preparing reports and records.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work effectively with changing job situations, the ability to respond diplomatically with customers, contractors, and company employees.
  • Ability to read construction drawings, effective oral and written communications, technical orientation, and records management.
  • Motivated, with the ability to schedule time effectively in order to meet required deadlines.
  • Ability to climb into and out of vaults and perform the lifting of equipment.
  • Must have valid Minnesota driver's license and a good driving record.

Preferred requirements:

  • Experience in utility locating.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Utility Locator:

The Underground Utility Locator marks the location of District Energy St. Paul's underground utilities/infrastructure for construction activities that require excavation. Responsible for pinpointing the paths of pipelines, fiberoptic communication networks, reinforced concrete slabs, castings, vaults and other related infrastructure.

The Underground Locator protects our infrastructure from damage during projects involving excavations by other utility contractors.

  1. Identify and mark District Energy facilities by referencing electronic and paper prints along with utilizing tracer wire.
  2. Provide the main point of contact for contractors and excavation crews working around District Energy infrastructure.
  3. Read and interpret design plans/drawings and specifications for the purpose of making field determinations and assessments in the field.
  4. Ability to think critically and troubleshoot complex situations in the field.
  5. Receives and organizes locate tickets to ensure efficiency of work and routes of assigned sites.
  6. Collect data from field observations and transfer to the CAD technician.
  7. Computer skills: the ability to navigate Gopher State One/KorWeb website, process locate tickets as required.
  8. Comfortable working in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Xcel documents.

2. Watchdog Coordination:

  1. Coordinate the watchdog requirements with each contractor that is working near District Energy St. Paul pipelines and related infrastructure.
  2. Must have the ability to build relationships and maintain excellent communication with the utility contractors.
  3. Must have the ability to communicate District Energy St. Paul's watchdog guidelines to the utility contractors.

3. Pipeline Maintenance:

  1. Assist with the completion of maintenance work orders through the District Energy Maximo Work Order Program.
  2. Provide distribution system maintenance including valve lubrications, inspection of underground vault structures, and record deficient system components.
  3. Participate in the semi-annual service entry maintenance program for District Energy customer buildings.

4. Other Requirements:

  1. Ability to work in inclement weather.
  2. Ability to distinguish colors.

  5. Participate in District Energy's "On-Call" System. Respond to after-hours calls for Gopher State One-Call locates and customer system questions.
  6. Participate in Distribution shutdowns, which could be after normal business hours.
  7. Strong Customer service skills.
  8. Follow and provide suggestions that will establish procedures for safe operations including routine

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to communicate verbally by expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to clearly impart oral information to other workers, customers, or the public; far visual acuity of 20 feet or more; gross manipulation of seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hands; foot/leg controls; hearing requirements to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds; keyboarding; kneeling; near vision acuity of 20 inches or less; peripheral vision; and reaching at/above shoulder level by extending hand and arms from 0 up to 150 degrees in a vertical arc.

The employee is frequently required to climbing ramps/stairs; climbing ladders/ropes/scaffolding; crawling; crouching; fine manipulation of picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm as in gross manipulation; lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.; pushing; pulling; reaching overhead by extending hands and arms in a 150 to 180 degrees vertical arc; sitting; standing/walking; stooping; and confined space entry into a space with limited entry or exit.

The employee is occasionally required to the use of a respirator.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee works the majority of their time in the field, including underground vaults and customer buildings. While performing these duties, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, and high/low temperatures, and hazards associated with moving machines. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. PPE is provided as needed.

This is a union position with an hourly pay at $32.70.
