JOB TITLE:

Laboratory Technician II or III

JOB PURPOSE:

The hired person will be one of three virologists providing high quality, and timely diagnostic services for the Virology Section within the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory. The activity is essential to supporting the health of companion animals, livestock, and wildlife in the state and region. Functions include but are not limited to the following: perform advanced virology diagnostic tests and services and report to appropriate stakeholders, maintaining laboratory equipment, and training/supervising student employees.

The position is available at the technician II and III levels. The search process will identify a candidate that fits best with either the II or III level positions. Distinctions in responsibilities between these levels is outlined below.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Essential duties and responsibilities for technician II and III positions
  • Perform molecular and serological testing on submitted samples with an emphasis on PCR and ELISAs
  • Assist with rabies testing, including sample processing, performing the direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) test, and reporting results
  • Maintain inventories and condition of supplies, equipment and facilities needed to perform routine testing
  • Operate and maintain sensitive scientific instruments.
  • Develop, maintain, and comply with quality control procedures necessary to maintain AAVLD accreditation
  • Perform and maintain proficiency testing for NAHLN-approved tests as part of the NAHLN laboratory network
  • Comply with UW biosafety and chemical safety requirements
  • Assist with hiring and training of undergraduate student employees

2. Essential duties and responsibilities for technician III position only
  • Co-manage the laboratory's workflow to meet expected deadlines
  • Develop and validate new testing procedures as needs are identified
  • Autonomously manage and direct the daily operations of the Virology Section
  • Assist with management of undergraduate student employees
  • Assist with the maintenance of laboratory databases, including sample tracking and results documentation.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Serve as a backup for one other WSVL laboratory section
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of data for internal meetings, conferences, and research publications
  • Participate in outreach efforts to promote the laboratory's diagnostic services to external stakeholders

This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming's Employee Handbook . Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closure based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Technician II: Bachelor's degree in a biologic science (animal science, veterinary or health science, biology, anatomy/physiology or related field). One year of relevant laboratory/research experience to include undergraduate experience.
  • Technician III: Bachelor's degree in a biologic science. Two years of relevant laboratory experience (diagnostic services, veterinary medicine, research, laboratory procedures/techniques, or a related field or educational equivalent) to include at least 1 years' experience in a virology laboratory obtained after graduation.

Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements:
  • Some positions may require equipment operation training, hazardous materials shipping and/or emissions quality control training, certification and re-certification after employed
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in virology including molecular and serological testing, handling of infectious agents, and communication of results to appropriate stakeholders
  • Knowledge of safety, chemical, and biological hazards of the occupation
  • Ability to communicate effectively, foster a cooperative team environment, and perform as a member of a team
  • Knowledge of diagnostic laboratory assays, protocols, and practices
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and best practices for laboratory biosafety and biosecurity, specifically as they apply to NAHLN and AAVLD laboratories
