Salary Range Starting At: $12.35/ per hour

Job Description:

As the Community Ministries Specialist you will provide general and seasonal assistance to those in need ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

What You Will Do:



  • Social Services


    • Utilize case management and intake skills to determine and meet needs as available via food pantry, emergency material or financial assistance, vouchers, etc., entering all information in an accurate and timely manner
    • Provide referrals for unmet needs, maintaining a current referral list
    • Ensure that case records, reports, and statistical data are maintained and submitted according to Salvation Army policies and procedures and funding guidelines
    • Maintain the pantry stocking and rotating items
    • Administer Pathway of Hope including identifying potential families, engaging them in strengths-based case management, developing and implementing individualized actions plans, and enter all documentation into SIMS (Salvation Army Information Management System) in an accurate and timely manner


  • Seasonal Assistance


    • Take applications, determine eligibility, and schedule appointments
    • Coordinate the referral and clearing house process
    • Oversee the Angel Tree program by completing tags, organizing elements to ensure proper distribution of gifts
    • Complete intake and verification of eligibility for back-to-school programming


  • Volunteer Coordination


    • Recruit, train, oversee volunteers for Community Ministries ensuring that all paperwork and reporting is completed in an accurate and timely manner


  • General


    • Ensure confidentiality of all participants
    • Be supportive of all Corps programming and activities, offering information to all served
    • Provide Corps Administrator with information for individuals in need of spiritual care and/or interested in Corps activities
    • Attend and participate in staff meetings
    • Participate in training opportunities as recommended and approved by the Corps Administrator
    • Participate in The Salvation Army Caseworker Certification program, completing the first module within the first 90 days of employment and the remaining modules within the first year of employment
    • Appropriately represent The Salvation Army in any public or online venues
    • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree or Higher in Social Services or Management preferred.

Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.

Certifications: Must have a valid driver's license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver's qualification standard; must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 90 days of employment. Must complete Caseworker Certification Program within 120 days of employment.

Skills/Abilities:



  • Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with clients, volunteers and donors.


Supervisory Responsibility: Supervision of Volunteers in special events, etc.

Physical Requirements Include:



  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity
  • Lifting, pulling, and pushing of materials up to 25 pounds
  • May require bending, squatting, walking.

Travel: Travel required for meetings, training and some social services.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office environment; May require some weekend and evening work especially around Christmas.
