About the Job

Dr. Xu's laboratory at The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota is looking to hire a temp/casual Research Assistant (Lab technician). The research of the lab focuses on RNA regulatory network on metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. We are seeking a motivated and hardworking individual with excellent organizational skills, who can assist with a variety of projects in a competitive area of basic and translational research. The successful candidate will be under the supervision of a senior postdoc and conduct experiments with guidance.

Focus of Job Responsibilities

Mouse Work - 70%

* Perform routine mouse breeding and genotyping in the laboratory.
* Assist senior postdoctoral researcher in conducting mouse metabolic phenotyping, including body weight measurements, MRI scans, glucose tolerance tests, and insulin tolerance tests.

Molecular Biology Studies - 20%

* Conduct molecular biology experiments such as Western blotting, RNA extraction, and Real-Time PCR.

Lab Maintenance - 10%

* Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory bench space and equipment, including glassware, aspiration bottles, water baths, and CO2 incubators.
* Handle biohazard waste disposal through autoclaving procedures.

Flexible Work Profile One is expected to work primarily on-site. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, MN. The Hormel Institute management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

* BA/BS degree, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years.

Preferred Qualifications

* Prior experiences in molecular biology, animal work or cell culture.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

* Must be comfortable working in environments that my include close contact with animals, animal byproducts, and related materials.
* Exposure to varying temperatures, outdoor environments, and potential odors or airborne particles related to animal care.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $23.94/hour
