About the Job

We are seeking a motivated Junior Laboratory Technician to support ongoing research in membrane protein biochemistry, structural biology, and tool development. This role provides foundational experience in a high-functioning academic lab that combines molecular biology, protein expression, and structural workflows including cryo-EM and functional assays. This position is temporary for one year.

Focus of Job Responsibilities

In this role, Junior Laboratory Technicians contribute to active research efforts by offering both research support and technical assistance, working closely with Senior Researchers, Postdoctoral Associates, and Graduate Students to maintain smooth lab operations.

Lab Maintenance - 80%

* Assist with bacterial and mammalian cell culture for protein expression.
* Support recombinant DNA workflows.
* Buffer/media prep.
* General lab maintenance.
* Participate in preparation and processing of samples for downstream applications (e.g., purification, assays, imaging).
* Maintain accurate lab records and contribute to experiment tracking.
* Coordinate with senior researchers and postdocs to advance project timelines.

Lab Organization and Operational Support - 20%

* Monitor and restock lab supplies; maintain inventory of reagents and consumables.
* Support equipment upkeep, shared space organization, and biosafety compliance.
* Assist with onboarding of new lab members by modeling standard operating procedures.

Flexible Work Profile One is expected to work primarily on-site. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, MN. The Hormel Institute management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

* High school graduation or the equivalent with some science courses and laboratory experience should provide the necessary background for work of this class. Equivalent combination of relevant academic and work experience may be substituted.
* Strong organizational skills.
* Strong oral and written skills.
* Ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience in fluorescent microscopy.
* Experience in cell culture methods.
* Ability to learn and incorporate new methods.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $21.63-$22.83; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 50%-74% Appointment
