Job Title: Diesel Field Mechanic

Location: Based out of Houston, Texas or MN - (Traveling Required)

Reports to: Fleet Manager

Compensation Range: $30 - $50/hour + OT + Per diem (OTR)

Other Compensation: Eligible for overtime and daily per diem while traveling

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking a skilled Diesel Field Mechanic to join our team and support our construction and emergency response operations. This role is critical to maintaining the functionality and safety of our fleet and heavy equipment. The position reports to the Fleet Manager and requires frequent travel to various job sites. Success in the first 12 months includes demonstrating strong mechanical aptitude, ensuring timely and effective repairs, and maintaining high safety standards.

What You Will Do



  • Read job orders, observe and listen to truck/equipment in operation to determine malfunction, and plan work procedures.
  • Disassemble machinery, heavy equipment, and diesel/gasoline engines to remove parts and make applicable repairs.
  • Diagnose, analyze, repair, adjust and align components of machinery, heavy equipment and engines.
  • Order and requisition parts and materials as needed.
  • Maintain vehicle records by annotating all received services and repairs.
  • Complete tests run on repaired machinery, heavy equipment, and engines to verify adequacy of repairs.
  • Confer with operators, observe, test, and evaluate operation of equipment to properly diagnose cause of malfunction.
  • Understand and perform various daily and weekly assignments from verbal or written communication.
  • Keep equipment and work area clean and orderly.
  • Adhere to all company safety standards/policies and applicable OSHA regulations.
  • Install ignition systems, align front wheels, change or recharge batteries, and replace transmission and other parts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications



  • 5+ years of experience servicing heavy diesel equipment such as bulldozers, graders, loaders, forklifts, and conveyors used in construction.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license and a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).


Preferred Qualifications



  • Hydraulics troubleshooting experience.
  • Active Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Flexibility to work at different job sites as needed.
  • Certificate from college or technical school.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form.

Physical Requirements and Environment

Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, and balance in varying conditions.

Must be able to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and talk or hear.

Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Must have specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, etc.

Ability to work in challenging environments including but not limited to adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, exposure to mechanical parts, wet and/or humid conditions, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration, and loud noise levels.
