Job Description:

Airbus Helicopters is looking for a Safety Engineer to join our Engineering Team in Grand Prairie, TX. In this role, you will work in a close relationship with the project team, architects and designers to help execute all aspects related to safety and reliability. You will also ensure that Airbus products are developed, designed, produced and supported according to state-of-art and the relevant safety standards.

Your Challenges:

Safety Analysis: 70%

  • Analyze system architectures, systems and subsystems concerning safety, failure cases and hazards
  • Check design characteristics to reach safety performance for all kind of helicopter applications
  • Support the systems installation inside the aircraft to reduce risks of cascading failure, fire or risks in case of collision with birds.
  • Drive design and architectures to secure programs success
  • Define, if needed, recommendation to modify the flight manual for operational safety
  • Challenge components and system suppliers to ensure a design fulfilling safety / reliability requirements
  • Produce reports regarding analysis performed

Certification activities: 30%

  • Support demonstration to official services (FAA/EASA, Customer's own Airworthiness Authority) that safety objectives of the regulations are met in order to contribute to the certification / qualification.
  • Support the airworthiness and project team in the design choice and certification / qualification strategy
  • Support the development of certification / qualification packages including certification plans, compliance checklists, and conformity inspection plans
  • Coordinate with FAA DERs and ODA Unit Members or other applicable authority representatives in support of certification / qualification requirements

Your Boarding Pass:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering relevant to the applicable system or equivalent experience
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience (or verifiable demonstrated equivalent) of aircraft systems design, development, integration and/or certification
  • Three (3) years in Safety and Reliability
  • Experience as Compliance Verification Engineer of advantage
  • Aviation architecture knowledge with willingness to discover system design
  • Knowledge of certification processes and standards FAA; EASA, Military
  • Flight safety (safety objectives definition)
  • System and Safety design such as ARP 4754, and ARP 4761
  • Avionics and Electrical power generation and distribution
  • Avionics environmental qualification requirements and limitations
  • Avionics systems layout requirements and considerations
  • Basics Avionics: core computers & displays, Alerting, communications/ICS, Auto Pilot, ,
  • Airborne Navigation & Radio communication systems (VHF/UHF, VOR, ILS, FMS, GPS, ADS-B, etc.)
  • Control Panel / Switches
  • Lighting (internal/external, NVIS, search lights, etc.)
  • Ground tools
  • Digital literacy
  • 10% Domestic and International travel
  • Must be a US Person under ITAR definition (U.S. Citizen, green card holder or person covered under our existing ITAR license)

Preferred Skills/Education:

  • Masters of Science in Engineering relevant to the applicable system or equivalent experience
  • Airworthiness
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI) (parameter to be displayed and open mechanism to be implemented)
  • Aircraft Systems Integration

Physical Requirements:

  • Onsite or remote: 80% Onsite except when on travel
  • Vision: able to see and read computer screens and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings. Daily
  • Hearing: able to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds on the production floor including safety warnings or alarms. Daily
  • Speaking: able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications. Daily
  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment and some tools including production tools such as hydraulic lifts. Daily
  • Carrying: able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 10lbs/5kgs. Daily
  • Lifting: able to lift documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 10lbs/5kgs. Daily
  • Pushing / Pulling: able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools. Rarely
  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on the computer. Daily
  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving. Infrequently
  • Standing: able to stand for discussions in offices or on the production floor. Daily
  • Travel: able to travel independently and at short notice. Approximately 5% - 10%
  • Walking (include routine walking such as to a shared printer to retrieve documents): able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces. Daily
  • PPE required: Steel-toed shoes are required for all shop floor visits, appropriate hearing/eye protection may also be required when visiting the shop floor.
