BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT STATION LABORER DEPARTMENT OF WATER Bureau of Water Supply Number of Positions: 12 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval) Starting Annual Salary: $4,650.44/month This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with SEIU- Local 73 (Bargaining Unit 45) Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid. Select your correct bargaining unit FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL RESULT IN A REJECTED BID APPLICATION Applications for this position will be accepted until 11:59pm CDT on 07/04/2025 Under supervision, perform unskilled manual labor and custodial duties at a municipal water treatment plant and surrounding grounds, and performs related duties as required. Positions allocated to this classification will be subject to working in spaces that at times have low clearances, dark and dimply lit and confined. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * Accesses dimly lit areas, including upper and lower-level basins within water treatment facilities * Pulls, drags, and attaches industrial water hoses to service water lines * Flushes and clears intake and settling basins, drains, drainage channels, catch basins, intake screens and gutters by using high powered hoses to push sediments and remove discarded fish into an area that can be discarded as directed by Foreman of Station Laborers and/or operating engineers at water treatment facilities * Cleans, sweeps, and mops terrazzo and tile floors, concrete floors, stairways, dock areas and other work areas at water treatment plant facilities using brooms, mops, scrubber machines, floor sweepers and related equipment * Moves furniture, office equipment, and boxes * Empties garbage from refuse containers located inside and outside the facility and loads garbage into dumpsters * Operates a forklift to load and unload deliveries of supplies, materials, and equipment and uses pallets to move and distribute materials and supplies to designated plant locations * Operates snow blowers and uses shovels to remove and clean snow and ice from walkways and dock areas at plant facilities * Cleans grounds area around plant facilities, picking up and removing trash and debris * Erects and removes snow fences * Cleans bathrooms and performs related custodial duties to assist in maintaining the cleanliness of plant facilities as needed Additional duties may be required for this position. Location: JWPP(Jardine Water Purification Plant) & SWPP(Sawyer Water Purification Plant) Days: Monday - Friday Hours: Various Qualifications
THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Willingness and ability to perform the duties of the job NOTE: Assignments requiring the operation of a forklift will require positions to be trained and evaluated by the employer prior to the assignment, as required by OSHA standards administered by the Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) WORKING CONDITIONS * Exposure to outdoor weather conditions * Exposure to indoor weather conditions including working in standing water and sediments * Exposure to loud noise, fumes or dust, oily or wet environment * Work performed in cramped or confined spaces * Work performed above or below ground level and with low clearances PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS * Heavy lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling (up to 75 pounds) is required. * Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time * Ability to operate applicable hand tools and power equipment * Ability to climb ladders and/or stairs while carrying industrial water hoses * Ability to tolerate working in dimly light and confined locations * Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs * Ability to lift and hold power hose extended away from the body while working for extended periods of time * Ability to walk through high standing water and sediments to access locations for cleaning SELECTION REQUIREMENTS This position does not require a test or interview. Qualified bidders will be hired in seniority order.
