The Opportunity:

Join UCF IT's private cloud team, a dedicated group responsible for managing the university's on-premises datacenter infrastructure that supports multiple departments and enterprise services. As a Systems Engineer I, you will support the operation and maintenance of the Private Cloud infrastructure by managing VMware virtualization environments, performing virtual machine provisioning and updates, and automating infrastructure tasks. This role provides first-line support for virtualization platforms, assists with Dell hardware maintenance and datacenter operations, and helps administer enterprise backup systems.

We are seeking candidates who have entry-level IT network experience or help desk support experience. Strong candidates will have a customer service mindset with virtualization knowledge.

Responsibilities:


  • Manages and supports VMware virtualization infrastructure, including updates, patching, and configuration management. Provisions and maintains virtual machines and performs necessary changes to support infrastructure stability and performance.

  • Develops and maintains automation scripts and tools to streamline virtual machine provisioning, configuration management, and routine maintenance tasks. Continuously enhances automation to improve efficiency and consistency.

  • Assists in Dell hardware maintenance tasks, including installation, upgrades, monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairs. Participates in routine datacenter activities to ensure hardware reliability and operational efficiency.

  • Supports the administration and operation of the enterprise backup system. Performs backups, restorations, and monitors backup processes to ensure data integrity, reliability, and compliance with organizational policies.

  • Adheres to UCF Infrastructure ITIL processes, including change management procedures, ensuring all planned changes are properly reviewed, documented, and communicated. Coordinates with stakeholders to minimize disruption and ensure smooth implementation of changes.

  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation of system configurations, procedures, standards, and operational guidelines. Contributes to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives by creating and updating technical documentation.

  • Provides first-line technical support and assistance to internal teams and stakeholders regarding virtualization, hardware, and backup systems. Responds to support tickets promptly and collaborates with teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues effectively.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree; or High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field.

  • Familiarity with basic IT troubleshooting concepts.

  • Background working with systems hardware, virtualization, backup, and recovery.

  • Experience with IT help desk support, with strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to troubleshoot issues.

  • Proficient in writing and maintaining code, and working with a version control system such as Github.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

This is not a remote position. A hybrid work schedule may be available following a training period, depending on work duties, university and IT policies, and supervisor approval.
