Summary:

Apheresis Role: Responsible for assembly and operation, according to institutional/FDA/AABB protocols, of the apheresis machine and related equipment as indicated for hospital patients and is responsible for assistance in the provision of 24-hour, year-round call coverage whenever stem cell collection, erythrocytapheresis, leukopheresis, or plasmapheresis is required. Also assists the bone marrow transplant team with thawing of stem cells.

Dialysis Role: Responsible for assembly and operation of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, including cycler and manual (CAPD, CCPD), according to institutional protocols and in adherence with CMS and ODH guidelines. Responsible for liposorber pheresis and provision of 24-hour, year-round call coverage whenever dialysis treatment is required.

Responsibilities:

  1. Works collaboratively with and within an interdisciplinary health care system.
  2. Assists in the development of policies and procedures related to therapeutic apheresis.
  3. Orient new and developing staff, ensure competencies and provide ongoing education.
  4. Independently and safely performs the following procedures: therapeutic plasma exchange, erythrocytapheresis, leukocyte reduction, and peripheral blood stem cell collection.
  5. Assists the bone marrow transplant team with the thawing of stem cells.
  6. Independently manages the care of patients with multiple types of central lines.
  7. Maintains apheresis equipment per policy.
  8. Assists with department projects which may include research, data collection, and quality projects.
  9. Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates nursing care with a focus on family-centered care for individuals or groups of patients within the assigned scope of practice.
  10. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age and developmental status.
  11. Assists in the development of policies and procedures related to therapeutic apheresis and dialysis.
  12. Orient new and developing staff, ensure competencies, and provide ongoing education related to apheresis and dialysis.
  13. Responsible for assessment, coordination of care, discharge planning, nursing care delivery, and evaluation and documentation of care for pediatric and adult (burn center) patients with acute renal failure, and ESRD and their families.
  14. Active participation in SCOPE, a dialysis collaborative with pediatric institutions, including database maintenance.
  15. Ensures quality of dialysis water systems, including culturing, obtaining LAL's, reporting all results, and re-sanitizing equipment as needed.
  16. Performs leadership and professional duties.
  17. Performs patient-centered care duties.
  18. Performs quality improvement and safety duties.
  19. Participates in the development of education for staff members for clinically related issues. May be responsible for precepting new employees and acts as a mentor to the clinical staff.
  20. Performs evidence-based practice duties.
  21. Supports the provider staff and actively promotes collaboration for efficient operation and delivery of quality care, legendary customer service for pediatric patients using a team approach.
  22. Performs systems-based practice duties.
  23. Performs informatics and technology duties.
  24. Staff may be temporarily assigned to an area throughout the Akron Children's Hospital enterprise, based on patient needs requiring similar knowledge and skill.
  25. Other duties as required.

Other information:

Technical Expertise

  1. Problem-solving skills and excellent communication skills are required.
  2. Independent judgement and the ability to manage multiple tasks and plan for both short-term and long-term projects are required.
  3. Experience in healthcare is preferred.
  4. Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is required.
  5. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, guidance, and motivation to other staff members with emphasis on working as a collaborative team to provide quality service to patients and their families.
  6. Experience working an electronic medical record system (i.e. EPIC) or similar software is preferred.

Education and Experience

  1. Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed as a registered nurse in the State of Ohio. BSN preferred.
  2. Years of experience: Minimum of 1 years' experience in pediatric nursing.
  3. Years of experience supervising: Leadership experience preferred.
