Performance Excellence Consultant (Clinical)

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Performance Excellence Consultant is an improvement practitioner responsible for leading the adoption of the Bryan Health Improvement System by developing people and processes with the capability for effective, sustainable improvement and patient-centered performance. Facilitates activities and coaches the organization on the principles and methods of operational excellence in the areas of strategy deployment, visual management, scientific problem solving, and standardization. Uses proven process improvement methods from Lean, Six Sigma and other sources to optimize the value and experience delivered to our customers by reducing variation and waste. Models the ideal behaviors necessary for an effective management system and culture of continuous improvement.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Partners with administration at all levels, physicians and staff throughout the organization in applying our organizational alignment process to develop and implement improvement plans and goals, based on organizational strategic priorities, initiatives, and goals. (Operational performance, regulatory compliance, revenue cycle, growth.) Also includes the Bryan Health Improvement System and Performance Excellence Office Improvement plans.

3. *Leads project teams including: Selecting participants; developing charter/scope and targeted outcomes; developing stakeholder engagement; leading the application of improvement principles and methods; ensuring effective results monitoring; , coordinating the action, follow up, and spread plans: holding participants accountable for outcomes and assignments; and coordinating meeting details and logistics.

4. *Facilitates all types of necessary activities to support improvement including: Training, Rapid Improvement Events , Plan-Do-Study-Adjust (PDSA) projects, coaching cycles, executive presentations, data science and team meetings.

5. *Leads the use of data science to measure the impact of improvement activities by defining appropriate process and outcome metrics, determining valid and reliable collection strategies, abstracting the data from departments or stakeholders, analyzing data to create actionable information using statistical techniques, and developing visually effective reports and presentations.

6. *Proactively identifies new regulations or requirements that may benefit from the implementation of standard work or the reevaluation of the current state and partners with the appropriate leader(s).

7. *Facilitates the identification, validation and effective spread of best practices (sourced internally and externally) across clinical and non-clinical departments to accelerate our improvement journey.

8. *Fosters innovation, collaborati0n, obstacle validation, and root cause analysis within improvement teams to develop effective and sustainable countermeasures to complex problems.

*Develops communication plans and communicates extensively with key stakeholders; crafts messages presentations, reports, memos, emails, etc. tailored to the appropriate target audience and desired outcome.

9. Collaborates on Bryan Health Improvement System assessments of behavior, processes and results at all levels of the organization through gap identification, root cause analysis, action planning and report-outs.

10. Supports the development of training materials, educational workshops, processes, standard work, tools, and templates to support the Bryan Health Improvement System, improvement teams, and the Performance Excellence Office.

11. Engages in extensive and continuous personal growth/development in the topics relevant to operational excellence through a combination of self-study, attendance at in-person or virtual education offerings, coaching/mentoring, and professional affiliations.

12. Conducts ongoing benchmarking of current operational excellence news, educational opportunities, trends, research, and results at both the regional and national/international levels in healthcare and other industries.

13. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

In addition to the principal job functions contained on the primary job descriptions, the following duties are also required in the department noted above.

1. Serves as a clinical advisor to the Performance Excellence Office and focuses on improvements to clinical areas, processes, and outcomes for the organization.

2. Conducts ongoing benchmarking of current clinical and operational excellence news, educational opportunities, trends, research, and results at both the regional and national/international levels in healthcare and other industries.

3. Uses proven process improvement methods, combined with clinical expertise, to optimize the value and experience delivered to customers by reducing variation and waste.

4. Utilizes clinical experience to improve performance, processes, practices and standards pertinent to the populations and areas served.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

2. Knowledge of health care industry including health care clinical roles/licensures and processes, industry regulations and accreditations, payers, Electronic Health Records and health system structure.

3. Knowledge of relevant equipment, supplies, electronic devices, and software used in a health care environment and relevant to work functions.

4. Knowledge of organizational development and human resources processes for employee onboarding, continuous development (including continuing education), coaching, mentoring, and performance management.

5. Skill in improvement processes such as organizational alignment (strategic planning, benchmarking, voice of the customer), visual management (5S, data science), problem solving (PDSA, RCA, Six Sigma, Toyota Kata) and waste elimination (Leant-Value Stream Mapping, process observation) and standardization (standard work).

6. Skill in operational performance measures in the areas of employee and patient safety, clinical and non-clinical quality, customer/patient experience, employee engagement, service timeliness/access, and operational finance.

7. Skill in advanced use of Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, and Visio.

8. Skill in data visualization/presentation, preferably using Tableau.

9. Skill in project management.

10. Skill in facilitation of groups of up to 30 people.

11. Skill in change management.

12. Skill and professionalism in oral and written communication including presentation skills.

13. Ability to develop and conduct effective educational programs.

14. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms.

15. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, including medical staff, volunteer and ancillary staff.

16. Ability to prioritize and balance multiple responsibilities, actions and projects.

17. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

18. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

19. Ability to succeed in a rapidly changing internal and external environment with changing priorities and needs.

20. Ability to define, measure/collect, analyze, visualize and present complex data to communicate meaning.

21. Ability to train, facilitate and lead teams on continuous improvement principles, and methods.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required. Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience required. Minimum of one (1) year applying process/performance improvement methods required. Experience facilitating project teams highly preferred.

OR

Bachelor's degree in a healthcare related field from an accredited institution required. Current medical or allied health licensure in the State of Nebraska required. (Examples may include Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Radiologic Technologist, Speech Therapist, Pharmacist or other similarly licensed medical profession). Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in a healthcare environment required. Minimum of one (1) year applying process/performance improvement methods required. Experience facilitating project teams highly preferred.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Certification related to improvement, coaching, project management preferred but not required. Examples: Six Sigma Black Belt, Project Management Professional (PMP), Lean Certification, Certified Manager of Operational Excellence, Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)
