Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor of Education and Student Affairs, the Executive Director serves as the senior clinical leader for Student Mental Health and Wellbeing (SMHW) Services and acts as the physician of record for oversight of all medical and clinical aspects of operations. This role collaborates closely with UCSF Health to ensure a seamless, integrated student health experience across programs.

The Executive Director provides strategic direction and oversight of clinical care and operations within SMHW. They develop, implement, and monitor medical management policies and procedures while leading quality assurance, performance improvement, and risk management programs. Additionally, they ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing behavioral health services. They directly supervise a team of providers.

This position directs the development and implementation of clinical information systems to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. It promotes the effective use of technology in the clinical setting and oversees utilization management to ensure accessibility and quality of care. The Executive Director leads financial management, budgeting, and strategic planning to support program growth, integration, and sustainability.

The role also encompasses administrative leadership, including oversight of clinical processes, records management, and operational planning. The Executive Director manages resource allocation, including staffing, facilities, and material resources, to optimize service delivery. They develop and implement strategies to enhance behavioral health services for a diverse student population while fostering an inclusive and supportive care environment.

This position plays a vital role in advancing the mission of UCSF's Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Services by ensuring the delivery of high-quality, accessible, and comprehensive behavioral health support for students.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $270,000 - $321,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Student Mental Health and Wellbeing resides in the Office of Education and Academic Affairs. The mission of Student Mental Health and Wellbeing is to optimize the mental health and wellbeing of students and learners and help them achieve academic success, personal development, and lifelong wellness. SMHW offers mental health counseling and psychiatry services, health education and promotion, health insurance support services, immunizations, and local oversight of the UC Student Health Insurance Plan.

Wellness and Health Promotion utilizes a global, holistic view of health and wellbeing to support the wellness of person, place, and planet with particular focus on the prevention and early intervention portions of the wellbeing spectrum.

Required Qualifications


  • CA Licensed, or eligible to be licensed within 6 months of hire, as an MD or DO in the State of California
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-residency clinical practice and 3 years of supervisory experience
  • Minimum of 6 years of directly related experience.
  • Strong knowledge of the latest medical research, practices, and technologies
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills; ability to make critical decisions in a timely and effective manner; flexible and adaptable
  • Demonstrated capacity to articulate a vision and implement strategies to accomplish it
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and emotional intelligence
  • Ability to build positive relationships and effectively communicate with healthcare professionals, students/patients, and other internal and external stakeholders
  • Understanding of the unique health needs and challenges faced by different populations and an ability to provide culturally appropriate, equitable, and accessible care

Preferred Qualifications


  • Board certification in a specialty area (Psychiatry) appropriate to the role (preferred)
  • Strong preference for expertise in psychiatry and mental health care (preferred)
  • Experience in college health or managing young adult patients (preferred)

License/Certification


  • CA Licensed, or eligible to be licensed within 6 months of hire, as an MD or DO in the State of California
  • MD or DO from an accredited school of medicine
