The department of Facilities Maintenance at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Trades Specialist II (Lead) Lock Shop. About the opportunity: To maintain a comprehensive key and lock program that ensures a safe and secure learning environment throughout all West Virginia University Facilities. To provide guidance, instruction and specifications in lock selection, application, installation, maintenance, and record keeping. To work closely with user groups and security personnel to ensure that locking devices are applicable to user needs while maintaining proper levels of security and code applications. What you'll do:
- Incumbent is responsible to function independently as a unique craft or skill.
- Normally, this employee will report directly to a supervisor and may lead a team consisting of craft Leads, Journeymen, Trades Workers, or unskilled workers.
- Assignments are made on a case-by-case basis as the need arises for the institution.
- Employee is recognized as an expert in the field and will be required to coordinate with other crafts.
- Functions as a team leader, providing guidance to journeymen, trades workers, and any other support personnel as required. Follows procedures and makes work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion ensuring proper quality and quantity.
- Ensures that proper safety procedures, equipment, and personal protective equipment are used while performing job duties.
- Receives work orders. Interfaces with Work control, Supervisor, Manager, and requesting party to finalize project needs and scope.
- Provides continual inspection of assigned area to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule recommends to the supervisor major repair needs, assists supervisor in updating deferred maintenance. Assists in development of new key/security policies and procedures. Responsible for keeping up-to-date on new technologies and systems as they are developed.
- Individual will have responsibility to read and review prints on new and existing building projects for repair or construction associated with specific job duties and expertise. Individual will also develop as-built sketches of completed projects.
- Individual will maintain knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements pertaining to maintenance and construction. Individual will attend project meetings and interact with contractors, vendors, and engineers to assure that work meets WVU requirements.
- Determines and recommends to the supervisor the needs of the project in regard to crew size, types of crafts, material availability, equipment, paperwork, safety checks to maintain paperwork and material flow in order to maintain schedule.
- Provides daily reports on actual progress versus projected progress to supervisor. Maintains the original scope of project to ensure project cost control. Informs supervisor of needed discipline and performance problems. Ensures that work group processes all work requests, material requisition, weekly reports, and invoices necessary to complete assignments according Physical Plant operation.
- Completes detailed cost estimates and drawings. Assists supervisor in disciplinary action.
- May fill in for supervisor or manager. Inventories individual assigned work tools of crews. Assists in interviewing of candidates. Assists in the detailed design of projects. Must be able to respond when called during off hours to cover emergency situations
- Must be able to operate computers utilizing various software programs, such as, Physical Plant maintenance management programs involving work orders and materials accountability, building support systems, and other systems as necessary.
- Rekeys locks. Repairs, replaces, installs, or modifies all door hardware such as locks, hinges, closer stops, and coordinators. Repairs or adjust door swing so that it will operate correctly. Installs doors and jambs. Accommodates electronic and manual systems.
- Makes all keys, either original or duplicate, by impression, duplication, or coding. Develops and organizes a new key/core plan for a floor or entire building when a master key is lost. Performs building maintenance for all door security hardware.
- Provides complete written and computerized records of keying systems to all WVU Facilities Management maintained buildings
- Opens file cabinets and security files, repairs or installs new locks on cabinets, fabricates or repairs parts, levers, and springs for locks that are no longer available.
- Recognizes, interprets and designs all levels of keying systems so that top level security is maintained at all times, making a more efficient and convenient working system. Examples are great grand master systems whether in standard pinning or electronic. Works with Building Supervisors and Key Control Supervisors in designing, implementing, and day-to-day operation of electronic and key and lock systems.
Pay Grade: 15 Hours: Mon-Fri 7a-3p
Qualifications
- Must have high school diploma or GED.
- Must have one of the following:
- 2 years experience with the mechanical, electrical, and electronic application of the locksmithing trade, including lock systems, lock hardware, and key types.
- Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational locksmithing program.
- Completion of an associate degree as a locksmith.
- One (1) year experience leading and/or training others.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Computer, mechanical, electronics, electrical, and carpentry.
- Working knowledge of master keying and all types of locking and door hardware.
- Thorough knowledge of lock systems, lock hardware, and key types.
- Thorough knowledge of specifications and codes for safety, fire and disability issues
- Ability to evaluate and assess key systems appropriate for a specific need.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer for the purpose of data input.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
- Ability to organize workflow to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner.
- Ability to install doors, jambs, and all door hardware.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate work schedules and goals to employees.
- Demonstrated ability to provide continual inspection of assigned areas.
- Demonstrated ability to inform supervisor of needed discipline and performance problems.
- Demonstrated ability to assist supervisor in disciplinary action.
