Nature of Work: This work involves the safe and efficient operation of the heaviest and most complex City construction and maintenance equipment and involves providing work direction to a small crew of workers. Supervision is received from an assigned supervisor who assigns and inspects work upon completion.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience. High school graduation or its equivalent preferred AND Five (5) years of experience in the operation of automotive equipment of the type assigned to this classification OR Four (4) years as an Automotive Equipment Operator II.

Special Qualifications: Must possess and maintain a valid Class "A" commercial drivers license with "N" endorsement and air brake certification at the time of application. Must possess a 2nd Grade Hoisting and Portable Engineers Certificate by the end of the probationary period.

Pay Range: $24.25 with step increases to $35.22 Hourly

Who Can Apply: Applicants for a closed competitive posting are required to meet the following: Candidates must be a current or former City of Omaha employee in any of the following categories: Part-time, Seasonal, Classified, Unclassified, or Probationary, who has worked, at the time of application, at least 1,040 cumulative hours within the last 5 years and has been employed by the City at sometime within the last 18 months and who meets the qualifications as set forth in the posting.

Examination Information: Familiarization is scheduled for July 8, 2025, with the performance test scheduled for July 9, 2025. The final score consists of a passing standard score of 50.

* Knowledge of minor maintenance needed to repair and maintain assigned equipment
* Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operations
* Knowledge of the geography of the City
* Ability to operate various types of heavy automotive equipment, related construction equipment, and basic hand tools in the performance of assigned duties
* Ability to complete reports of work completed

* Ability to load and transport truck excavating equipment
* Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public
* Ability to climb, reach, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, push, and pull objects 51 to 75% of the time
* Ability to move and transport objects (such as pieces of concrete and asphalt, tools and equipment, snow plow blades and debris) weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds up to 33% of the time, objects up to fifty (50) pounds 34 to 66% of the time, and objects up to twenty (20) pounds 67 to 100% of the time

* Operates heavy, complex equipment assigned to this class in the performance of maintenance and construction projects
* Transports heavy equipment to and from job sites
* Breaks up and removes concrete from streets, ditches, and culverts
* Cuts ditches and trenches
* Loads earth, debris, sand, and salt for disposal at another site
* Grades land, slopes banks, and digs trenches
* Pushes dirt, demolishes buildings, and removes unneeded trees
* Completes and submits reports of work completed
* Inspects fluid levels, cleans, and performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment operated
* Removes snow and ice from streets and spreads salt and sand
* Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor
* Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification
* The following are specific to the designated division: Park Maintenance: Cleans the marina, dike, golf and park lagoons, dam sites, and ditches
* Hauls in and spreads rip rap and fills in with dirt
* Performs work on various construction and demolition projects including excavation and backfilling for plumbing, concrete tear out and road grading, and heavy crane work
* Clamshells dirt and cleans ditches
* Street Maintenance: Blades asphalt from streets and parking lots
* Hauls in and spreads rip rap and fills in with dirt
* Clamshells dirt and cleans ditches
* Prepares, lays, and finishes asphalt and concrete projects
* Installs and picks up snow fences
* Sewer Maintenance: Operates and maintains track excavating equipment
* Repairs and replaces pipe or sewer structures
* Forms and sets grades for concrete flatwork and structure replacement
* Pours and finishes concrete flatwork
* Pours and finishes new concrete inlets and manhole covers
