UCI Health hematologic oncologists provide expert consultation and treatment for patients with many different types of cancer. UCI Health hematologic oncologists provide consultation and treatment for patients with many different types of cancer, These include including malignancies of the blood such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as solid tumor carcinomas such as colon, breast and prostate.

People diagnosed with cancer typically need a range of medical specialists, treatments and services, all of which are available at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Orange County's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center.

We also offer the only adult hematopoietic stem-cell transplant services in Orange County, which means that patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers no longer need to travel long distances for this life-saving treatment.

Our oncologists are highly skilled in the leading-edge treatments and many also participate in clinical trials. We strive to provide the best possible care, tailored for each patient's individual needs. We are recognized for delivering the highest quality care by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) Certification Program, which is an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.


Your Role on the Team

Under general direction of the Clinic Medical Director and Nurse Practitioner III Supervisor, the Nurse Practitioner II performs operational level duties in for Hematology/Oncology patients or approved patients in the Infusion Center, with major emphasis on patient care delivery and patient management. Conducts in-depth interviews with patient and/or family, constructs comprehensive medical histories, performs initial and periodic medical exams, evaluates patient signs and/or symptoms, directly performs or orders diagnostic studies and interprets completed results, and develops and implements long- and short-range treatment plans. Provides patient counseling, assists with patient follow up care. Serves as a resource to Hematology/Oncology faculty and nursing staff. Utilizes EMR to document all encounters and bill appropriately. The Nurse Practitioner II will also be expected to participate in educational activities for all levels of staff, and students. The candidate will preferably have a focused experience in Hematology/Oncology. What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Division and UCI Health System.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Knowledge of the elements of a medical history and skill in the history-taking process.
  • Possess clear understanding of core oncology principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and reviewing standard protocols for chemotherapy and oncology patients.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
  • Experience in working with immune suppressed patients.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Educational training and/or experience to support setting and patient population.
  • Must be a licensed Nurse Practitioner in the State of California.
  • Must possess a valid/current California RN license.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications upon hire (required within 1st month of employment).
  • Valid/Current CA Nurse Practitioner Certification.
  • Valid/Current DEA number.
  • Oncology Nurse Certification and/or Chemotherapy Certification.
  • Direct patient care for chemotherapy side effects.
  • Previous experience working with Infusion patients.
  • Must possess experience in educating patients, nursing staff and community in chemotherapy treatments, side effects and general cancer information.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures
  • Previous experience working as a Nurse Practitioner in Hematology/Oncology

Special Conditions:

  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
