Job Description:

This position provides leadership for the overall construction function of a Ryan division, ensuring the best practices of profitable integrated project delivery across the regions within the division, with expected annual construction revenue of over $1 Billion. This is a key role providing strategic and operational leadership for the division as well as the whole company. The individual is responsible for all construction project management staff within the division and is expected to achieve or exceed key divisional construction metrics for revenues, gross profit, and net profit. The role partners with other construction peers across the company, sharing best practices and sharing staff skills and capacity. The role also partners with leadership in business development, service functions, and shared services.

Job Requirements:

Strategic Leadership:

  • As a member of the senior leadership team, works with the Chief Construction Officer (CCO), peer SVP Division Construction Operations and Field Operations to create the strategic plan for national construction operations as well as provide guidance to regions and sectors.

  • Provides input into strategic and tactical planning and policy making, helping support the culture and communication within the company.

  • Partners with Divisional Presidents, Divisional Field Operations, Regional Presidents, Market Leaders, and Regional Construction Leaders within the division to set regional annual plans, annual budgets along with growth and performance goals.

  • Monitors the performance of the divisional operations and keeps the executive leadership team apprised of key developments and trends.

  • Is a leader within the external construction community, including active and visible trade association involvement.

  • Partners with Regional and Sector leadership to strategically grow the overall Divisional business.

Division Construction Operations:

  • Responsible for construction P&L within the division.

  • Monitors all division construction projects and, with regional office VPs of Construction Operations, provides appropriate focus to distressed projects to evaluate and implement action steps to get projects back on firm footing, both financially and operationally.

  • Works closely with peer Division SVP of Construction Operations and Field Operations to consistently implement processes and procedures across our Divisions, Regions and Sectors.

  • Drives consistency and promotes best practices of construction operations for the division, regularly monitoring and improving basic construction systems (estimating, scheduling, safety, quality, cost, and project management methods, etc.). Adheres to and ensures standard process and technologies are utilized, including virtual design and construction, advanced building materials/systems/techniques, and integrated project delivery.

  • Assures collection and dissemination of relevant information to improve future projects, including historic cost data, subcontractor performance, and lessons learned.

  • Works with region construction leaders and the legal department to appropriately structure construction contracts to manage and mitigate risk. For Ryan-owned projects, assures open communication about risk-sharing between construction and development functions.

  • Works with regional construction leadership to ensure successful project setup for all projects, and provides appropriate additional preconstruction focus on the projects that present greater risk due to size, schedule, or sector type.

  • Focuses on all elements of customer satisfaction for projects in the division, assuring customer goals are understood, communicated and prioritized. With other regional office team members, manages key customer relationships in pursuit of future project opportunities.

  • Meets workforce standards and goals, e.g. PC to PM ratios, revenue per PM goals, and MWBE.

  • Participate in the Go/NoGo process to ensure the company is pursuing the correct opportunities.

Integrated Service Delivery:

  • Coordinates and collaborates with all divisions and the CCO to provide the best staffing to win and execute work regardless of the location of the work. This provides solid execution for projects and develops staff and expertise.

  • Promotes use of internal resources for comprehensive integrated project delivery, especially with A+E and REM functions.

  • Works with Sector Leaders to promote and market technical specialties.

  • Build and maintain relationships with internal shared services and lead or support change initiatives.

People Leadership:

  • Acts as cultural leader internally and externally, reflecting Ryan's mission and values. Develops strong relationships with key customers and staff.

  • Responsible for building and maintaining a high-caliber division construction workforce, including recruiting, mentoring and career development. Participates in recruiting, interview and selection process for VPs, DoCs and Field Coordinators.

  • Assures expertise is developed in strategic product types. Actively identifies high performance and high potential team members for continued development and advancement, while also focusing on low potential and/or low performance team members for improvement or departure. Guide and approve each Region's promotions, compensation adjustments and incentive awards.

  • Delivers on diversity goals and commits to an inclusive workplace.

Requirements:

  • Proven ability to manage various types and sizes of commercial projects. Individual projects are generally in the $10-70 million range with some over $200 million.

  • Advanced knowledge of estimating techniques, legal and insurance issues, and cost control.

  • People management skills, including the ability to effectively provide direction and mentor others.

  • Good understanding of open-shop and union labor environments.

  • 20+ years commercial construction experience, with 10+ years in design-build or negotiated construction. Extensive experience in leading construction operations, business development, preconstruction, and/or field management across multiple geographies.

  • 10+ years' experience at an executive level in a large corporate concern with matrixed responsibilities leading business deals and overall business strategy.

  • Post-secondary degree required in construction management, engineering, real estate management or related field. Advanced degree preferred, e.g. MBA.

  • The ability to travel throughout your Division to visit jobsites, offices and clients. Occasional travel on a national basis may also be required.

  • Residency in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas or Tampa is preferred.
