Overview
The Paul Robeson Cultural Center ( PRCC) promotes cross-cultural understanding of African American and African diaspora culture and heritage and provides educational and cultural support for students in our university community, with an emphasis on those of African descent. Originally founded 1969 as the Black House, the Center was established at Rutgers University with a two-fold mission of assisting the university in providing a safe and welcoming environment for African American students and to be a resource to the campus community regarding African American history, contributions, and issues. In 1976, the Black House was rededicated in the name of Rutgers famed alum Paul Robeson, who was a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement, distinguished performing artist, and an advocate for social justice at home and abroad. The PRCC is one of four cultural centers under the umbrella of the Cultural Center Collaborative in the Division of Student Affairs. The four centers, which also includes the Asian American Cultural Center, the Center for Latino Arts & Culture, and the Center for Social Justice Education & LGBT Communities, work in partnership to support the needs of historically underrepresented and marginalized communities by creating welcoming and holistic learning environments inclusive of all identities and allies.
