Workweek

Scheduled hours between 8am - 9pm, Monday - Friday with occasional weekend hours as needed. Schedule will be determined by supervisor to meet department needs. Department needs shift based on the academic semester and intersessions. This position will be primarily scheduled for evening hours.


Position Summary

The Library Assistant works collaboratively with the library team to foster a positive, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all library users and ensures users receive friendly and efficient service. This role is responsible for the day-to-day operations in the library which includes maintaining the space, supporting students, community members, and employees, circulating materials, managing study spaces, and opening, and closing the Learning Commons. This position will oversee the circulation of items which include books, equipment, resources, and technology. This position is responsible for the management, advertisement, and circulation of items loaned out by the library. This position will assist users with technology used in the Learning Commons. This role will work closely with the library team to collect information, analyze, and make changes to the resources and services offered.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Maintain, process and circulate all library materials, including those placed on-hold, reserved, or available through interlibrary loan; by assisting users in locating resources; and by collecting, recording and processing fines and fees.
  • Process new library user records, issue library cards, and update and maintain user records.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to library patrons in ways that include, but are not limited to referring and scheduling appointments for assistance; and answering inquiries from community members, employees and students across various channels; communicating in a positive and inclusive manner.
  • Participate in the library inventory process, which includes supporting library collection development and maintenance.
  • Create and maintain an inviting and safe environment within the Library, shelving and reshelving books, shifting collections and displays, cleaning, rearranging furniture and other equipment and maintaining all equipment and technology.
  • Following appropriate protocols, perform opening and closing procedures in the Learning Commons, and maintain the space, by assuring accurate signage, directions, instructions and workflows. Manage requests for study rooms, classrooms and meeting spaces.
  • Support training, development, retention and outreach events, initiatives, and projects aimed at students, employees and community members.
  • Assist Learning Commons and Library patrons with technical issues, including equipment usage, directing patrons to online resources, and resetting passwords.
  • Manage the Library student ID machine and supplies, creating student IDs as needed.
  • Coordinate and ensure maintenance of technology loaner program equipment; lead the processing, promoting, research/reporting and training for the program.
  • Develop and distribute promotional materials for library services.
  • Collect, analyze and report on data pertinent for ensuring optimum library efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Lead development and/or enhancement of administrative documentation, including workflows, policies, instructions, tools, and other such material, and implement such policies and guidelines as needed.
  • Maintain and replenish supplies and materials.
  • Provide support and direction to student employees, volunteers and interns.
  • Work collaboratively with others (e.g., supervisor, campus leadership, colleagues, stakeholders, student employees, vendors) to accomplish functions and responsibilities.
  • Assume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous work experience in a library setting preferred
  • Two years related experience or Library Technical Assistant (LTA) certificate/degree
  • Community college experience
  • Bilingual Spanish/English
