Posting Summary |
The New Ark Freedom School (
NAFS) aims to boost student motivations to read, generate more positive attitudes toward learning, increase self-esteem and connect the needs of children and families to the resources of their communities. A product of the Civil Rights Movement and 1964 Freedom Summer,
NAFS serves 3rd - 8th grade families at Thirteenth Avenue Elementary School, over six weeks, using the Children's Defense Fund (
CDF) Freedom School model.
Servant Leaders serve as classroom teachers in
NAFS. Servant Leaders support breakfast and lunch distribution, lead Integrated Reading Curriculum activities, and lead/chaperone activities in the afternoon. Servant Leaders should be experienced in working with groups of children, responsible, energetic, possess the ability to think on his/her feet, be a good leader and a strong role model. Servant Leaders have access to further leadership development and networking opportunities geared toward continued direct service and advocacy on behalf of children and families. Servant Leaders report to the
NAFS Site Coordinator.
Position Duties
- Serve as a positive role model for all scholars.
- Supervise and maintain safety of scholars.
- Maintain a professional decorum.
- Set up, manage and break down classroom space according to standards outlined by CDF and Rutgers University - Newark.
- Engage a maximum of 10 scholars per class in the Integrated Reading Curriculum, according to the standards developed by CDF and Rutgers University - Newark.
- Work with New Ark Freedom School staff to ensure that all program components are implemented with fidelity.
- Report any issues or concerns regarding program operation to the Site Coordinator.
- Collaborate with staff to establish and maintain a supportive and structured environment for the children entrusted to their care.
- Serve as a Harambee! Leader each day of program operation.
- Serve as a leader of afternoon activities and other special events.
- Chaperone field trips.
- Participate fully in all pre-service training, including the Ella Baker Training and Policy Institute in Knoxville, TN for one week in June.
Skills Required
- Interest in working as part of an intergenerational team, with the ability to help build positive team spirit.
- Ability to motivate others.
- Strong appreciation and understanding of individual cultural history and the willingness to be open and respectful of all cultures.
- Enthusiasm for the CDF Freedom Schools program and commitment to children's advocacy and servant leadership.
- Ability to work in the summer heat, lift at least 50 pounds and actively participate in all afternoon activities.
- At least 18 years old, enrolled in college and completed at least 1 year of undergraduate studies
- or recent college graduate who has previously served as a Freedom School Servant Leader Intern (SLI).
- Ability to reside near Newark area for duration of training and summer program (room and board/housing assistance are unavailable).
- Valid ID and reliable transportation.
- Satisfactory drug test and satisfactory background check for criminal and child protective findings.
