Valiant is looking for a Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance (DMHA) Research Analyst to join our team! In this role you will research and writing products that address disaster management and humanitarian assistance. The position is within the CFE-DM's Applied Research and Information Sharing (ARIS) Branch. The Analyst performs duties associated with coordinating, implementing, and balancing multiple research studies and products. The candidate will work closely with the ARIS team to produce written products that offer readers an operational understanding of disaster management capabilities and vulnerabilities globally but with a focus on the Indo-Pacific region. The objective is to deliver a comprehensive disaster management knowledge base that provides best practices and lessons learned for advancement in coordination in Disaster Response and Humanitarian Assistance (DMHA).
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Work on a writing team to research, analyze, and integrate disaster management data and information to create comprehensive and accurate publications that adhere to client-specific style and content requirements particularly for international environments where there are significant civil-military coordination requirements.
  • Write disaster management related materials to include fact sheets, case studies, best practices, research articles, disaster management reference country handbooks, briefings, presentations, memos, information and policy papers, planning documents, conference materials, professional journal publications, situation reports, research studies, after action reports, time-sensitive requests for information, and others.
  • Design and create operationally relevant disaster response case studies for use in training modules.
  • Provide support to an Academic Partnership Program by cultivating academic partnerships and information exchanges with academic partners, universities, students/interns, and international organizations.
  • Conduct operational and academic applied research by creating structured and scientific approaches to collect, analyze, and interpret data using appropriate research methodology (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method).
  • Provide information and guidance to students and researchers regarding methodology design and program requirements and edit/revise academic papers to create practical recommendations in the field of DMHA.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to gather relevant information and verify data integrity. Facilitate the integration of external feedback into documents. Review external feedback and suggest improvements where necessary, ensuring the publication aligns with the needs of the target audience.
  • Edit research papers for logical flow, clarity, completeness, punctuation, grammar, and content.
  • Work with a graphics department to ensure draft meets standards of the final production web and printed product.
  • Coordinates marketing of program as needed which may include website updates, report and brochure development, social media and newsletter posts, and outreach to other institutions.
  • Liaise with other branches within the CFE-DM and engage with staff who have knowledge or connections related to specific subjects or countries.
  • Support civil-military training, exercises, operations, short-/long-term planning, and assessments as part of the USINDOPACOM theatre campaign plan to conduct research, share information, and exchange best practices related to disaster management and humanitarian assistance.
  • Organize and facilitate events, training sessions, and exercises related to the development of products.
  • Prepare and give presentations/briefings at CFE research & academic symposiums, workshops, and exercises.
  • Attend regular CFE-DM meetings.
  • Maintain updated task / to-do deliverables dashboard within CFE-DM and ARIS.
  • Travel is required to support the delivery of disaster management engagements for the Center. (up to 10%)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Master's degree required. Degree in English, Communications, Journalism/Public Affairs, International Studies, Disaster Management, or a related field for either Bachelor's or Masters.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT: Active Secret

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:



  • 5+ years of experience in analyzing and synthesizing information. Must have experience writing and editing various research products. Strong preference for applicant to have experience in developing academic and operational research proposals and knowledge of research methodology.
  • Experience writing products that promote civil-military cooperation during humanitarian and disaster response missions and training preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to adapt to change in deliverables and timelines.
  • Good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills in the preparation and presentation of reports.
  • Able to effectively prioritize and work on multiple tasks with concurrent deadlines and demonstrate excellent time management skills and efficiency.
  • Strong MS Word skills (experience with formatting, editing, and publishing technical reports, planning documents, or fact sheets).
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write fluently in Standard U.S. English.
  • High level writing - ability to digest and synthesize information.
  • Experience with public speaking, presentation, and facilitating groups.
  • The ideal candidate will have a commitment to teamwork and an ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to take direction yet work independently with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Willingness to collaborate with others from different backgrounds, respect for diverse perspectives
  • Travel up to 10% CONUS and OCONUS.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical requirements may include, but are not limited to, lifting, ascending, and descending stairs, climbing, extended sitting or standing, to various degrees. This job will primarily be in an Office Setting.
