Job Summary

Milwaukee Public Schools seeks an exceptional Central Services Teacher - Violence Prevention (Grades K-12) candidate who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders.

The Central Services Teacher - Violence Prevention (Grades K-12) position utilizes and coordinates evidenced-based resources to promote strategies which foster student emotional wellbeing in the classroom, including trauma-sensitive teaching practices, social and emotional learning, bullying prevention, and emotion regulation. Broad responsibilities include maintaining a deep level of understanding of the aforementioned topics, developing updated professional development, providing coaching and implementation support, and coordinating data collection systems to support school implementation. The Central Services Teacher - Violence Prevention (Grades K-12) understands that the classroom is the most important place in the district and can clearly communicate how social and emotional learning practices align with the MPS Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan.

Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a fully licensed teacher is required.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience working with social and emotional learning.
  • A current five-year or lifetime license in teaching issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in mindfulness, social emotional learning strategies, trauma-sensitive practices, positive behavior intervention supports and response to intervention is required.
  • Experience with developing and implementing professional development on topics associated with social and emotional learning, trauma-sensitive practices, bullying prevention, classroom management, and/or emotion regulation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Effective oral and written communication and presentation skills are essential. Skill at organizing resources and establishing priorities. Excellent teamwork skills, including the ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse individuals at all levels, are required. Must have excellent planning and organizational skills. Must have strong skills in the development of presentation content and materials, including PowerPoints, handouts, and activities that engage learners through a variety of learning modalities. A strong working knowledge (and/or ability to learn) of computer applications to include Office, Infinite Campus, OneDrive, Google, and the MPS mConnect is required. Must be able to juggle numerous responsibilities with varying deadlines. The ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports is required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a broad knowledge of all facets related to teaching and understands research-proven practices to improve student achievement and social and emotional functioning.
  • Actively engages and teaches Violence Prevention Program activities including but not limited to: social and emotional learning, Youth Mental Health First Aid, bullying prevention, mindfulness, emotion regulation, classroom management, and trauma sensitive practices.
  • Plans and implements systemic efforts to support, sustain, and grow social and emotional learning and trauma sensitive practices within school's tier one, tier two, and tier three systems.
  • Facilitates needs assessments and resource analyses as a part of school efforts to inform implementation planning.
  • In alignment with school implementation plans, provides coaching, technical assistance, and professional development to school teams, staff members, district staff, and community partners on the implementation of identified practices.
  • Maintains a broad knowledge of evidence-based universal trauma-sensitive practices to improve student achievement, social and emotional functioning, and the mental wellness of students across all grade levels.
  • Assists in the identification, development, implementation and evaluation of curricula for social and emotional learning, bullying prevention, and emotion regulation.
  • Participates as a collaborative member of internal and external work groups to define policies and procedures impacting the overall social and emotional functioning and mental health of students.
  • Designs and develops professional development, incorporating a variety of teaching modalities and participant engagement strategies, and connecting to district priorities.
  • Teaches responsive classroom management strategies as a component of trauma sensitive practices.
  • Participates as a member of the Violence Prevention Program's learning community to provide answers and guidance to students, parents, staff and the general community related to student wellness.
  • Serves as a spokesperson for the Violence Prevention Program and its various programmatic areas.
  • Attends VPP staff meetings, professional development, associated district meetings, and related activities.
  • Is willing to travel to multiple locations and work outside of a typical work day/schedule to provide professional development and support schools as necessary.
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary range: $52,827.70 - 99,937.66 (191-day teacher calendar)

Placement on the salary schedule is based on years of fully licensed teaching/pupil services experience in a k-12 setting and education beyond a bachelor's degree.
