Principal Engineer - Large Capital Projects

Primary Responsibilities for the Principal Engineer - Large Capital Projects:
The Principal Engineer - Large Capital Projects - is responsible for all engineering aspects of their associated project. They will ensure all elements of design meet Carpenter standards and all applicable local codes and standards.
* They will ensure all equipment design and fabrication meets applicable Carpenter and local standards. This technical oversight will extend across all disciplines for their assigned projects. They will interface with Maintenance, Operations, Metallurgy, Quality, and EHS groups to ensure that all purchased equipment is in compliance with Carpenter standards and needs of long-term manufacturing of desired products.
* They will participate in installation to help the engineering, operations, and maintenance team to have a deep understanding of the as-built equipment and to ensure that final drawings reflect as-built conditions.
* They will participate in commissioning activities ensuring that equipment meets all acceptance criteria and remain with equipment until Operations and Maintenance can reliably run the equipment. Post commissioning, they will verify final drawings and functional descriptions prior to project close.
* The Principal Engineer will collaborate with internal and external partners to drive innovation and ensure the successful integration of new and existing technologies. This includes working closely with suppliers, research and development, and industry experts to make sure the proposed equipment is the best possible for Carpenter's applications.
* The Principal Engineer will mentor, and coach other engineers, operations, and maintenance personnel affiliated with the project. They will utilize GAE project management tools and procedures to support project managers and drive assigned projects to successful completion.
* Modest travel is expected and is to include such items as vendor meetings, project meetings, fabrication oversight, travel to other Carpenter facilities to witness specific equipment, and factory acceptance testing. The frequency should be 2-3 times per quarter for 3-5 days.
* Ensures a safe workplace.
* Proactively designs safety into engineering and operational decisions
* Incorporates environmental concerns and awareness into all designs
* Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required for the Principal Engineer - Large Capital Projects:
* 2 Year degree in engineering science required with 20 years of experience, 4-year engineering degree is preferred with a minimum of 10 years' experience.

Planning/Organizing/Managerial Knowledge:
(Ranges from task-focused to integrating related functions, to broadly strategic integration)
* Strong process expertise in several of Carpenter's key technologies or processes
* Detailed understanding of the critical design elements of these processes
* Detailed understanding of the functional performance and controls of these processes
* Ability to troubleshoot performance and reliability challenges
* Considered the resident mechanical or electrical expert on these processes
* Considered a strong contributor on the elements that are not his/her field of specialization (i.e. consider a strong controls contributor if a mechanical engineer, considered an asset on hydraulic systems if an electrical engineer)
* Can translate Carpenter business needs into technical needs and solutions
* Acts as a key contributor on all assigned projects
* Possesses project management skills
* Capable of managing multiple priorities simultaneously
* Understand Carpenter Operating Systems and Process flow
* Works well across Carpenter's various functional organizations
* Provides clear, concise communications regarding decisions and challenges
* Conveys technical information in an understandable fashion to technical and non-technical professionals
* Takes the time to explain the why and how to employees who are affected by their decisions and projects
* Clear track record of strong relationships with local operations and maintenance.
* This position will be directly accountable for the successful operation of installed equipment.
