Sr. Scientific Operations Leader

In this role, you will report to the Regional Director and will work closely with the Avantor's Lab and Production Services professionals to serve our customers by performing customized, mission-based lab work and research protocols that help return time back to science.

Location: Tarrytown, NY

Shift: Monday - Friday (First shift)

Annual Salary Range: $115,000 - $120,000 + Annual 5% ICP Bonus

What we're looking for

Education:

• Bachelor's Degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry) with a minimum of [7-9] years of leadership and industry experience.

• Masters w/ 4-6 years of leadership and industry experience.

• PhD w/ 2-3 years of leadership and industry experience.

Qualifications:

• Proven leadership experience in scientific and operational environments, with a demonstrated ability to lead teams and drive results in alignment with Avantor's service delivery model.

• Proactive mindset with strong business acumen and a clear focus on growth, innovation, and operational excellence.

• Track record of success leading or contributing to scientific projects and cross-functional teams in fast-paced, service-oriented settings.

• Technical proficiency in laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and experimental design, including data analysis and interpretation.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with external partners.

• Leadership and mentoring capabilities, with a passion for developing talent and fostering a culture of scientific excellence and accountability.

• Strategic thinking and the ability to contribute to long-term scientific and operational goals while remaining agile in day-to-day execution.

• Experience in entrepreneurial or startup-like environments required, with the ability to pivot, problem-solve, and lead through change.

Avantor's Lab and Production Services team is a crucial part of the Avantor Services group serving over 500 customers in biopharma, pharmaceutical, educational, industrial, and high-tech industries with customizable, flexible solutions and end-to-end laboratory operations support.

Team Leadership & Development

• Lead and manage a team of 12+ associates, including Inventory Coordinators, Technicians, Supply Chain Coordinators, and Site Operations Specialists.

• Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

• Strategically plan and deploy team resources to meet operational demands and support individual skill development.

• Implement coaching, mentoring, and structured leadership training initiatives to support career growth and succession planning.

• Demonstrate strong leadership and mentoring abilities, with a passion for developing talent and fostering a culture of scientific excellence.

Operational Oversight

• Oversee daily operations to ensure alignment with customer expectations and organizational goals.

• Maintain compliance with Health & Safety regulations, GxP standards, and EHS training requirements.

• Support sustainable lab practices, including initiatives like My Green Labs and IOT-enabled inventory systems.

• Ensure proper documentation for compliance, training, and operational excellence.

• Coordinate vendor relationships and provide basic support for third-party contractors.

Customer & Stakeholder Engagement

• Serve as the primary contact for service inquiries, ensuring timely and professional resolution.

• Collaborate cross-functionally and communicate effectively with internal scientists and external stakeholders.

• Lead customer meetings, operational reviews, and support Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs).

• Maintain a customer-driven leadership style, with a proactive mindset and strong business acumen.

Scientific & Technical Expertise

• Contribute to scientific operations with a commitment to excellence and sustainability.

• Apply expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation.

• Demonstrate proficiency in a wide range of laboratory techniques and instrumentation.

• Translate scientific information into actionable business strategies and insights.

• Drive process improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery.
