The Senior Communications Specialist plays a key role in developing, delivering, and maintaining high-quality communications products and processes in support of the FEWS NET Learning and Data Hub project. This position is responsible for leading both internal and external communications efforts, with a strong emphasis on social media strategy, content creation, and brand consistency across all platforms.

The Specialist will ensure that messaging aligns with the overall goals and identity of the FEWS NET project, contributing to a cohesive and professional public presence. In addition to managing communications outputs, the role supports routine project reporting and general communications tasks.

Success in this role requires expertise in strategic communications, technical writing, and the use of digital tools and platforms that enhance online engagement, learning, and documentation.

Candidates hired for the position may work remotely within the United States (U.S.) or from one of our U.S. office locations. This does not include U.S. territories.

Responsibilities




  • Develop, deliver and maintain communications guidance, synthesis documents, and standardized communications materials including documents, slides and training content.


  • Translate complex technical concepts into accessible reporting, communications products, documentation for data visualizations and other value-added products.
  • Support data platform documentation through checks for compliance with style and brand guidance.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Technical Communications Specialist to develop multimedia training content for data platforms through brief video tutorials, help systems, and online user guides.
  • Manage social media platforms assigned to the Hub as part of the broader FEWS NET outreach strategy.
  • Support routine task order communications such as monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Document monthly collaboration meetings and author the reporting deliverable.
  • Write in explanatory and procedural styles for multiple audiences.
  • Consult with stakeholders to assist in implementing updates to software documentation.


Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree required in communications, journalism, international development, computer science, data analytics, or a related field; or Master's degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, technical writing, or a related field, preferably within international development or data-driven environments.
  • Familiarity with international development, humanitarian assistance, or government contracting environments is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Proven experience developing and executing strategic communication plans across multiple platforms and stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated expertise in technical writing, particularly in translating complex data and analysis into accessible content for a variety of audiences.


Skills:



  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, compelling, and accurate content tailored to varied audiences.
  • High level of attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and consistency across all communications products.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive) and other collaborative tools.
  • Experience managing and optimizing content across social media platforms (e.g., LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) using tools like Hootsuite or similar.
  • Excellent project management and multitasking skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning abilities, with a track record of aligning communications with organizational goals.
