The Senior Staff Accountant is Responsible for: Accomplishing complex and involved accounting functions, typically encompassing multiple organizational components, such as conducting monthly closings on all books, and preparing comprehensive financial reports required by governmental agencies. Performs related accounting duties such as reviewing and analyzing financial statements for assigned accounts, reconciling transactions and accounts, compiling and analyzing financial information, and preparing and inputting journal and general ledger entries. Prepares detailed and comprehensive financial statements and reports for review and use by top executives in evaluating overall financial results. Serves as professional resource to accounting staff by identifying and resolving accounting errors, providing training and approving specific accounting functions.
- Scheduling tasks and assignments to be accomplished by self and others, and other departments, in order to meet strict standards and deadlines for assigned responsibilities.
- Monitoring and evaluating accounting and information systems impacting assigned areas, and recommending appropriate improvements.
- Reconciling discrepancies and providing training; and completing more complex accounting procedures such as depreciation and prepaid assets. May review and approve work papers and journal entries prepared by staff, provide training; and advise of changes or additional analyses required to ensure compliance with department standards and accepted accounting principles.
- Performs related accounting duties such as reviewing and analyzing financial statements for assigned accounts, reconciling transactions and accounts, compiling and analyzing financial information, and preparing and inputting journal and general ledger entries.
- Works on various special projects or assignments, as an individual or team member, such as conducting audit preparations, coordinating accounting changes with information systems staff, evaluating accounting systems and developing procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and accepted accounting principles, and so forth.
Job Requirements:
- Knowledge of accounting principles, theories and systems; and ability to analyze and balance accounts, maintain ledgers and journals, and prepare related statements and reports; at a level normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or closely related field. 5 years of direct accounting experience.
- In-depth knowledge of accounting, and Gateway systems and procedures, in order to assume responsibility for assigned comprehensive accounting functions, and to serve as a professional resource to others in identifying and correcting accounting errors; at a level normally acquired through three to five years progressively more responsible, related experience.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with various personnel in the collection and analyses of financial data.
- Advanced analytical abilities and high level of attention to detail necessary to collect, analyze, verify and make appropriate changes to accounting records; and perform involved and comprehensive analyses to prepare financial statements and reports.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to communicate with others in order to gather and exchange information, respond to telephone inquiries.
- Ability to continually proofread, and check and verify data and calculations of detailed statements and account records from printed form and computer monitor display. Use a keyboard and video display terminal to enter, retrieve, and/or audit information and data on a continual basis.
