Job Summary

In this role, you will use 2-D/3-D computer-aided design (CAD) to develop designs for electrical engineering such as earthwork, drainage, road design, and foundation. You will help construct detailed scale models, develop work plans, and review drawings for quality, accuracy, and completion. Your collaboration across disciplines will coordinate compliance and quality in the overall project design.

This position is for a SmartPlant 3D Designer who will prepare electrical 3D designs as well as 2D electrical AutoCAD and SmartSketch designs to support new facility infrastructure design for DOD and USAF projects. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, a can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs.


Major Responsibilities

  • Develop designs for electrical engineering systems such as earthwork, drainage, road design, foundation, and steel detailing with minimum supervision from which detailed scale models and/or construction drawings are completed.
  • Assist in constructing detailed scale models.
  • Ensure compliance with approved electrical design standards, applicable installation codes, and regulations in own work and by those assigned, to provide quality design.
  • Review and check calculations, design models, drawings, and design documents prepared by assigned designers/drafters for quality, accuracy, neatness, functionality, and satisfactory completion.
  • Participate in constructability reviews.
  • Coordinate the reviews for the accuracy of bulk material quantity take-offs and material requisitions for materials applicable to the discipline.
  • Work with designers in other disciplines to coordinate overall design and technical requirements.
  • Assist in the development of work plans, budgets, and schedules for basic electrical designer tasks based on input and direction from supervisor in designated discipline.
  • Provide on-the-job training for personnel within electrical design.
  • Generate 2D drawings or 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models with minimal guidance from others.


Education and Experience Requirements

  • Requires an AA/AS or Certificate in Engineering/CAD with 3-4 years of experience or 5-6 years of relevant work experience.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge & application of NEC code and NEMA/ANSI/IEEE Standards.
  • Experience with an electronic Cable Management System, such as the SETROUTE program, and ability to input and complete corrections to the database.
  • Ability to collaborate well with other disciplines.
  • Ability to cope with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.
  • Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to, drawings for electrical systems and equipment on nuclear or industrial process facilities, data centers, central utility plants, or complex building electrical systems.
  • Hands-on and advanced experience using Smartplant 3D, SmartSketch, and AutoCAD.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools effectively.
  • Broad knowledge of the application of electrical engineering design principles.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, schematics, and layouts.
  • Knowledge of Corporate guides and standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to resolve design issues independently and collaboratively with other engineering disciplines, construction, and the client.
  • Modeling of piping, HVAC, and Mechanical equipment in a Smartplant 3D model environment.
  • Previous DoD/DoE, USACE, NAVFAC, USAF, or NASA project experience. Experience working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ISO-9000.
