The Cook prepares large batch meals in a fast-paced environment at the Men's Residential Center under the supervision of the Residential Treatment Supervisor. In addition to cooking skills, individual must be able to maintain a clean kitchen and work area, and comply with sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards.

Education, Training and Experience:



  • Prior commercial cooking experience is preferred.
  • USDA recipes and guidelines experience a plus.
  • Current Multnomah County Food Handlers Permit or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Experience working within a nonprofit or social services environment is preferred but not required.



Competencies:



  • Excellent people skills and the ability to develop rapport with clients and others.
  • Ability to work independently, and as a member of a team.
  • Problem-solving abilities.
  • Time management skills.



Additional Eligibility Requirements:



  • Prefer an active driver's license, current insurance, and ability to pass our insurer's driving standards.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. occasionally, stand, bend, walk and reach.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Prepare large batch meals.
  • Assist with events and set up in a timely manner so that quality, temperature, and appearance of food are preserved.
  • Follow production sheets and recipes.
  • Always maintain a clean kitchen and work area.
  • Work with kitchen staff to assure quality and great service is provided.
  • Provide training and support to staff and volunteers.



Supervisory Responsibility: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with arms and hands, stoop, stand, walk and sit. Employee must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions:



  • Works in a kitchen using equipment such as stove, oven, dishwasher, slicer, coffee machine, mixer, and chef's knives to prepare food. Requires standing 4 or more hours a day. Employee is frequently exposed to heat, steam, and noise.



Schedule: This is an on-call position, 0-19 hrs. per week.
