Residential Counselors are responsible for supervising and providing crisis counseling and support services for clients in a residential therapeutic community. These services are provided both at the treatment center and in traveling with the clients in the community on recreation activities, on community service activities and recovery meetings. The MRC serves clients identifying as men who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, in a residential setting. This is a dynamic position in a team-oriented environment.

Education, Training and Experience:

* High school diploma or GED required.

* One year of social service experience preferred but not required.

* Prior experience using conflict resolution skills in a dynamic environment. Crisis counseling experience preferred.

* Prefer knowledge of addictions, criminal behavior, and at-risk populations.

Competencies:

* Cultural competence to work with multicultural individuals.

* Basic computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Word and Outlook.

* Ability to learn quickly and follow detailed policies and procedures.

* Serve as an appropriate role model for clients and coworkers and function as part of a team.

* Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

* Reliable form of transportation.

* If driving clients, a valid driver's license, current insurance, and ability to pass our insurer's driving standards.

* Successfully pass background check.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Provide clinical supervision of clients to ensure a safe, secure, and sanitary environment.

* Verify and monitor clients' location and status.

* Assist Residential Treatment Supervisor with intakes and orientations.

* Counsel clients in routine and crisis matters, providing case management services as assigned.

* Monitor and record client medications in accordance with MRC policy.

* Inform Residential Treatment Supervisor of pertinent client treatment issues.

* Coordinate information with the Residential Treatment Supervisor on urine collections, breathalyzers, curfews, passes, restrictions, and special meal times.

* Consistently apply VOA policies and procedures in dealing with clients and implement consequences as needed.

* Facilitate groups and lead education classes as assigned (not-to-exceed 15% of weekly scheduled hours).

* Responsible for personal and area searches in order to identify and confiscate contraband and to ensure safe and sanitary conditions.

Other Responsibilities:

* Transport clients to meetings and appointments as necessary, if driver meets insurer's driving standards.

* Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Effect on End Results:

* Maintain a consistent and stable program environment.

* Ensure 24-hour coverage of the MRC facility.

* Promptly communicate treatment, policy, and security issues.

* Ensure that clients meet casework goals.

Supervisory Responsibility: Position is not responsible for supervising other employees.

* Environmental Conditions: Work is performed in a residential treatment center. Must be prepared to handle client crises and/or emergencies.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position; 40 hrs. per week, Swing shift and weekends.
