Summary

The Planned Giving Director will be responsible for securing planned and estate gifts in support of the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation. This person will develop and lead the strategy related to planned giving and actively participate in foundation donor prospect strategy sessions with other development staff and build and maintain effective relationships with donors, prospects, board members, physicians, corporations, volunteers, financial planning professionals and the community at-large.

In addition to the primary goal, the Planned Giving Director will oversee the foundation's annual fund efforts to ensure yearly fundraising revenue goals are met. This includes special events, direct mail/response, corporate partnerships, individual giving, and special projects. The director will have oversight of the annual fund campaign formulating strategy and executing tactics while managing the associated annual fund team.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Engage in pro-active donor cultivation and solicitation through regular personal visits with key prospects and current donors.
  • Lead negotiations of planned giving agreements with donors and their financial advisors and/or attorneys.
  • Lead follow-up calls to major and planned giving donors and maintain meaningful relationships.
  • Develop and execute strategies to identify, research, cultivate and solicit qualified prospects for major and planned gifts in collaboration and cooperation with senior leadership.
  • Cultivate relationships with attorneys, trust officers, accountants, financial planners, and other estate planning professionals regarding planned gift opportunities.
  • Utilize tracking system for reporting on completion of assigned follow-up contacts, and the results achieved.
  • Develop strategies for major and planned gift donors and prospects assigned areas.
  • Respond to donors for recent outright gifts. Assess capacity and interest as potential planned giving prospects.
  • Respond with sample proposals geared toward a variety of planned gift vehicles
  • Design and implement a customized regional broad-based, proactive planned giving marketing plan.
  • Develop and organize planned giving health education and cultivation events.
  • In collaboration with foundation team, bring innovative and creative ideas and opportunities that raise funds, cultivate, or steward donors, and expand brand awareness of MFB and the foundation.
  • Direct strategy and execute tactics related to foundation annual fund campaign and efforts.
  • In conjunction with the Vice President, conduct periodic financial reviews of foundation assets, fund balances, and distributions held both inside and outside MFB

Customer Service Responsibilities

Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.

Responsibilities in Quality Improvement

Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.

Essential Job Qualifications

  • Analytical and financial skills to research and identify potential planned giving candidates.
  • A passion for developing and maintaining relationships with donors.
  • A Bachelor's Degree AND minimum 15 years of development or related field, including seven to ten years of planned giving experience. CFRE or advanced degree preferred.
  • Ten years of experience with leading a team and ability to supervise department personnel.
  • Experience building and managing expense budgets. Ability to interpret financial data to effectively set and communicate revenue projections and results.
  • Experience with Donor database software systems, specifically Raisers Edge.
  • Experience working with and managing high-level boards of directors and executives.
  • Working knowledge of planned giving vehicles available within the United States. Basic familiarity with IRS regulations concerning estate planning.
  • Experience in healthcare fundraising a plus.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel frequently to donor meetings and events.
  • The flexibility to work some evenings.
