Job Description

The UMKC Department of Information Services is seeking a Telecom Engineer who is team-oriented and known for their attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to take initiative.

Located in the UMKC's Flarsheim Hall, this individual will be responsible for working with fellow Telecom team members to install, inspect and maintain in-building communications facilities to include copper, coaxial, fiber optic, paging facilities and telecommunications room hardware. This individual will also provide technical expertise on communications equipment purchases, placement, configuration, operation, and maintenance.

Successful applicants will be organized, patient individuals, who can remain calm, and problem solve in fast-paced situations. This individual will be expected to provide exceptional customer service to our faculty, staff, students, and community. Work performed is often time sensitive, therefore multitasking skills are important. Duties include but are not limited to:

Oversee the installation and repair of all University-owned communications cabling infrastructure. Installations include all in-building and underground plant distribution systems comprised of copper, coaxial and fiber optic facilities.

Provide engineering expertise for outside plant services and obtain assistance from outside engineering experts when necessary. Make recommendations and present proposals/estimates for infrastructure improvements or expansion. Provide Campus Facilities with in-building wiring designs and estimates for campus projects.

  • Manage contracts for outside plant services by maintaining status and re-bidding as needed. Aid departmental staff in resolving outside plant issues,
  • Manage all duties related to maintaining reliable operations of critical Telecom owned/operated systems to include equipment room HVAC, fire suppression, physical security of facilities and maintaining the operations of the division's emergency generators.
  • Install, terminate, test and repair wiring, equipment, and peripherals for switched and non-switched services (voice, data, and video).
  • Install telecommunications systems, equipment, and peripherals.
  • Supervise and inspect the work of Telecom Technicians to ensure quality control.
  • Serves as backup to the department manager.
  • Interpret written and verbal requests, coordinate work with customers and complete all required documentation.
  • Perform "on-call" duties when required (outside of normal operating hours).
  • Use desktop software, including internally developed software, Microsoft Office, e-mail, and telecommunications system interface/configuration software.
  • Perform programming and repair operations on the campus telephone and emergency alert/phone systems.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing operations on campus fiber optics (inside and outside).
  • Renovate existing and construct new telecommunication rooms.
  • This position is responsible for locating all university telecommunications infrastructure/outside plant as part of the Missouri one call program.
  • This employee is responsible for the design, deployment, and maintenance of campus security camera systems.
Minimum Qualifications

Must have, OR meet eligibility requirements and be willing to obtain, Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification within the first six months of employment. Must be able to provide required documentation to be eligible for this position. UMKC is prepared to fund the training and certification for a qualified candidate.

A Bachelor's degree in telecommunications or 5 years' experience in outside plant construction, engineering, management, project management or a closely related field is necessary.

  • Fundamental knowledge of low voltage systems- voice, data, security, access control, grounding/ bonding, and life safety.

  • Use hand tools
  • Use power tools
  • Carry ladders ranging from 4ft A-frame to 14ft extension ladder
  • Work from ladder comfortably- heights up to 4ft-28ft
  • Operate motorized lifts, bucket trucks, etc.
  • Work in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications

  • Belden Copper & Fiber Installation Certification
  • OSP Fiber Splicing Certification
  • Inside wireman or low voltage certification
Anticipated Hiring Range

$80,000 - $85,000 annual, commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.

This position offers a hiring incentive up to $10,000 based on qualifications.
