Summary:
The HVAC Mechanic is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing all comfort delivery systems and associated equipment across the hospital and affiliated buildings. This includes HVAC systems, refrigeration units, ice machines, medical air, and vacuum systems. The role ensures optimal equipment performance, energy efficiency, and reliable environmental comfort for patients, staff, and visitors.
Essential Functions:
System Maintenance & Operations
Perform preventative maintenance and routine inspections on all HVAC and comfort systems.
Conduct daily system tours; log findings and submit to Facilities by noon each day (no more than 1 log may be missing monthly).
Complete 100% of weekly/bi-weekly tasks and at least 90% of monthly, quarterly, or annual tasks.
Detect and resolve potential issues before equipment failure; no avoidable wear-related breakdowns should occur.
Perform seasonal system adjustments to maximize energy efficiency and prevent failures (e.g., freeze prevention in coils).
Technical Knowledge & Compliance
Develop comprehensive knowledge of assigned systems within the first year.
Maintain cleanliness of mechanical spaces; ensure no storage or clutter on HVAC ductwork.
Monitor and calibrate system controls regularly to ensure equipment accuracy and minimal calibration-related issues (no more than 2 calls/month).
Inventory & Vendor Coordination
Maintain appropriate inventory of repair parts and replacement stock.
Track vendor performance and sourcing to ensure timely availability and cost efficiency.
Proactively manage backorders and identify alternative suppliers when needed.
Trouble Calls & Customer Response
Respond promptly to patient/staff comfort complaints with priority to patient-impacting issues.
Maintain a detailed daily trouble call log and submit by noon the next business day; no more than 3 monthly callbacks.
Perform performance measurements before/after modifications to ensure effectiveness.
Work Orders & Documentation
Complete 80% of work orders monthly; ensure tasks are completed within 60 days of issue.
Execute repairs or modifications required for system upgrades, space redesigns, or renovations.
Provide timely hand-off communication to co-workers and supervisors regarding in-progress work.
Emergency & Off-Hours Response
Respond to all hospital emergencies or drills per Facilities SOP.
Participate in fire drills as a member of the fire response team-no exceptions.
Be available to respond to off-hours calls related to equipment failures as required.

High School Diploma or Equivalent required

Licenses and Credentials
Refrigeration Technician [Massachusetts License] - Massachusetts Department of Public Safety and Inspections Division required
Experience
Minimum of 3 years' experience as an HVAC Mechanic 3-5 years required and Experience in a hospital or healthcare facility 3-5 years preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- It is required that the HVAC Mechanic is able to read and write in English and the HVAC Mechanic must be able to effectively communicate with staff, vendors, patients, and visitors.
- Staff adheres to all I C.A.R.E. Standards.
- The HVAC Mechanic must be a mechanically inclined individual with strong troubleshooting experience and skills, who is familiar with the HVAC systems that typically support a hospital or a healthcare facility.
- Must be able to demonstrate.

- He/she must understand the implications of maintaining a safe and reliable HVAC system in support of quality patient care.
