Registered Nurse - Renal/Medical-Surgical Unit

The practice of nursing requires specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to individuals and groups. The RN utilizes knowledge derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Care is provided in alignment with a patient- and family-centered model, promoting ongoing partnerships between healthcare providers, patients, and their families. The care delivered is age-specific and culturally sensitive. The RN adheres to the American Nursing Association (ANA) Code of Ethics and the scope of practice outlined in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.

Unit Description

The Renal/Medical-Surgical unit is a 24-bed unit specializing in the care of patients with kidney disease, including kidney transplant recipients. A continuum of care is provided to transplant patients through various donation processes such as living-related, cadaveric, or paired exchange. The nursing staff is trained in peritoneal dialysis, including both manual and cycler methods, and supports patients enrolled in pharmacologic research studies under the supervision of nephrologists and transplant surgeons. An on-site outpatient clinic provides episodic care to kidney transplant patients. The unit also cares for general medical/surgical patients with common diagnoses and provides remote telemetry monitoring for up to 8 beds. This patient mix offers nurses a dynamic and growth-oriented environment.
