Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $145,000 to $186,000/year. The full salary range for this position is $116,000 to $224,200/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

The Senior Director of Development manages all fundraising operations for Arts & Lectures at UCSB, the largest performing arts program on California's Central Coast. Working in partnership with the Arts & Lectures Executive Director, the Senior Director of Development position is a critical leadership role and represents the Arts & Lectures brand and programming to high-net wealth individuals in a community with a long tradition of philanthropy in the arts. This position is responsible for meeting fundraising goals of $4.5-6m annually and identifying, cultivating and stewarding donors through meaningful arts engagement. The Senior Director of Development manages a successful development team including up to two additional Directors of Development, Stewardship/VIP Concierge, and Development Coordinator. The Senior Director of Development is a key member of the A&L senior management team and the University's Central Development team. The University's Development resources include access to data management and research tools, collaboration with top fundraising professionals, and ongoing training and professional development opportunities. The Arts & Lectures program is a fun, fast-paced organization with a reputation for excellence in the arts and public programming. Because the great majority of Arts & Lectures' contributors attend A&L's many public performances and lectures, the A&L Development team has extraordinary opportunities for frequent meaningful contact with contributors at public events and the many strategic social activities affiliated with those performances and lectures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 10+ years Major/leadership gift experience, raising five-, six- and seven -figure gifts.
  • 7-9 years of fundraising experience in a university environment.
  • 7-9 years of experience in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing customized donor cultivations activities, such as dinners, luncheons, receptions, meetings, and tours.
  • 7-9 years proven success in major gift fundraising.
  • 7-9 years of experience using effective verbal communication skills to make persuasive oral presentations to colleagues, internal and external constituencies, to plan and conduct participatory meetings, to gain acceptance of decisions, and to advise and collaborate with others.
  • 7-9 years of solid experience of office and productivity software sufficient to function smoothly in a high technology-based environment (including but not limited to word excel, Google Suite, and database applications).
  • 7-9 years of demonstrated skill at gift negotiation and gift solicitation to engage complex and sophisticated individual, corporate, and foundation donors toward significant philanthropic outcomes.
  • 7-9 years of experience in supervising employees and managing multiple employee teams.
  • Strong knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, including strategies for donor identification, cultivation and solicitation.

  • Given Arts & Lectures' position as a leading cultural institution in the region, the Senior Director of Development must have the ability to connect with civic leaders, key philanthropists and University leadership.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • This is an annually renewable contract position with no limit on total duration.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 70% Fundraising - - The Senior Director of Development, Arts & Lectures is responsible for raising $4,500,000 - $6,000,000 annually for Arts & Lectures programming, education outreach, and special initiatives and programs. Identifies, cultivates, solicits, closes and stewards major and leadership gift prospects. Develops strategies, plans and priorities with the A&L Development team to ensure effective moves management among patrons at all giving levels. Devotes significant effort to personal solicitations focusing primarily on major gifts. Meets individually with major gift prospects within and outside of the Santa Barbara region. Collaborates with senior A&L Directors in major donor prospect relationships including proposing planned strategies leading to gifts; briefings in preparation for development-related meetings; crafting letters to donors and prospects, comments for donor gatherings; and sets and coordinates individual meetings with many key gift prospects. - Manages the A&L Development team's work on donor stewardship, recognition and publicity. Designs and executes tailored acknowledgments and recognition of large gifts, in coordination with Donor Relations as appropriate. - Represents A&L in attendance at various A&L and University wide events, meetings, trainings, conferences, and other activities, including those on weekends, evenings, and out of town. - Develops and manages volunteer involvement for A&L's major gift fundraising effort, including the A&L Council and work with Trustees of The UCSB Foundation Board.
  • 30% Management, Strategy and Administration - - Creates fundraising priorities for A&L, based on the Executive Director's priorities. Creates and executes a master plan for development of private gift support, prioritizing and coordinating with the Executive Director's overall priorities. This includes creating an annual revenue goal, operating plan, and expenditure budget. Manages the Development expenditure budget for A&L. Reports quarterly and annually on expenditures and income. - Contributes as a team member of the UCSB Arts development initiative/collaborative working with Humanities and Fine Arts and Arts Development colleagues to maximize donor relationships and brand arts at UCSB. Represents A&L on Central Development Office or other University committees, and may handle special assignments. - The Senior Director of Development manages a 5-person development team including a Director of Development (Special Initiatives), Director of Development (major gifts), Director of Development (memberships), Stewardship/VIP Concierge, and Development Analyst. Is responsible for work assignments, scheduling and coverage, performance evaluations, performance management, training and mentorship of the A&L Development staff.
