At Astrion, a proud teammate of the JETS II program, we're looking for a Softgoods Engineering Technologist ready to take on the challenge of crafting innovative, mission-critical fabric-based systems for manned spaceflight. What You'll Do As a key member of our dynamic team, you will:
- Design, prototype, and fabricate advanced softgoods for human spaceflight-including stowage solutions, structural inflatables, thermal insulation, ancillary suit equipment, and other deep space hardware.
- Collaborate with engineers and designers to translate complex requirements into high-performance softgoods solutions.
- Present creative concepts clearly and confidently to peers and leadership.
- Own your projects-drive tasks from concept through fabrication with initiative and precision.
- Perform custom sewing machine maintenance, modifications, and repairs.
- Develop patterns and mockups to validate fit, function, and ergonomics.
- Interpret and create fabrication drawings for prototyping and flight-ready soft goods.
- Stay on the cutting edge-research and integrate new materials and manufacturing techniques.
- Occasionally travel to other NASA centers for on-site fabrication or installation.
- Safely handle and transport equipment and materials; work in confined areas or elevated spaces when needed.
What You'll Bring Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma and 5+ years of relevant experience, or a BS in Engineering Technology or related field.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in softgoods design, development, and fabrication.
- Proficiency in operating fabrication tools-sewing machines, laser cutters, welders, 3D printers, band saws, drills, and more.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and within a collaborative team.
- Experience with Adobe, AutoCAD, and Rhino CAD software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in Industrial Design (BA, BFA, or BS) or equivalent.
- Experience with NASA/JSC Softgoods standards and JETS Engineering Life Cycle processes.
- Familiarity with prototyping and flight fabrication methods.
- Skilled in interpreting and creating fabrication drawings for aerospace applications.
