Job Summary
- Provides required Safety Policy and Promotion Leadership functions and oversight of the SMS. Ensures all Southwest Operational Employees are knowledgeable about Safety Management System (SMS) policies, processes, and tools relevant to each Employees responsibilities in support of the Safety & Security Commitment, Safety Objectives, and the SMS. This role will develop and manage SMS policies and processes to support Southwest Airlines' ability to effectively meet the regulatory requirements of 14 CFR part 5 Rule Safety Management System (SMS). Works with other department's SMS Teams to effectively conduct, train, and promote SMS for Southwest Airlines.

Responsibilities
- Manages Safety policy, promotion, training, and oversight of the SMS, which includes ensuring the Operational Departments are adhering to the SMS policies outlined in the Safety/Security Management Manual
- Develops, manages, and oversees Safety/Security Management Manual content
- Develops and manages Safety Promotion activities for Southwest Airlines in compliance with the regulations and manages the Safety Promotions calendar of safety topics to be communicated
- Presents Safety Management System content and strategy to Employees and various levels of Leadership
- Manages the analysis of available readership data and survey results in support of continuous improvement of safety promotion processes and products
- Develops and manages SMS training for Southwest Airlines
- Leverages insights and industry best practices to drive a Positive Safety Culture through communication and training
- Manages the annual evaluation of the Safety Management System and identifies continuous improvement opportunities
- Builds and maintains relationships with all S&S programs, other SWA operating departments, SWAU, and RP&C
- Serves as a Company delegate/representative on for industry meetings, seminars, etc. related to SMS.
- May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Expert knowledge of 14 CFR Part 5 Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Advisory Circular (AC) 120-92B
- Expert in identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system
- Expert skills in communication, including verbal, written, and interpersonal
- Advanced knowledge of building and maintaining relationships
- Advanced skill in leading efficiency efforts and trains others in developing efficient solutions
- Advanced knowledge of aviation operations
- Advanced skills in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
- Proficient in taking broad objectives and translating them into specific action plans
- Proficient ability to identify the right People for the job and provide on-going coaching to ensure strong Teams
- Ability to work in a stressful environment, including being able to interact with and present to all levels of management
- Ability to work well with others as part of a Team, professionally interact with other departments, labor groups, the public, and possess the ability to handle complex issues
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or GED
Experience
- Demonstrated experience in directly or indirectly leading Team(s)
- Previous direct leadership experience is highly preferred
- Expert level experience, expansive and far-reaching knowledge in:
- Aviation industry, aviation safety or safety management systems
- Airline operations, aviation Safety, system Safety fundamentals, standards, and accident investigation process
- FAA and ICAO Safety policy and promotion procedures/techniques
- Advanced knowledge in:
- Evaluation, auditing, or Safety experience
- Training
- Proficient knowledge in:
- Experience working directly in aviation, aviation safety, or flight operations is preferred
- Advanced level experience, seasoned and specialized knowledge in Aviation Safety Management Systems (SMS) is preferred
- Experience using Quickbase, Salesforce, and MS Office suite is preferred
Licensing/Certification
- Required: Credentialed Safety Certificate
- Required: Ability to maintain current U.S. passport or obtain a U.S. passport
Physical Abilities
- Ability to perform work duties from [limited space workstation/desk/office area] for extended periods of time
- Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
- Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job
Other Qualifications
- Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
- Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
- Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary and sensitive Company information
- Ability work extended hours and travel based on operational needs
Pay & Benefits: Competitive market salary from $116,350 per year to $129,300 per year* depending on qualifications and experience.
