Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill works to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. As the largest university-based local government training, advisory, and research organization in the United States, the School of Government offers up to 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year. In addition, faculty members annually publish approximately 50 books, manuals, reports, articles, bulletins, and other print and online content related to state and local government. The School is also home to a nationally ranked graduate program in public administration and specialized centers focused on information technology and environmental finance.

The Information Management Division supports the information technology needs of faculty and staff by collaborating to identify innovative ways to extend the School's mission. Dedicated to high-quality, thoughtful solutions, the team works with faculty and staff to make information and learning experiences accessible and engaging for the School's clients. Daily operations of the division include service and support, research and development, consultation and guidance, as well as infrastructure and system maintenance.
Position Summary
The School of Government is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Database Administrator to lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive data warehouse solution. This role will involve overseeing the entire data architecture lifecycle from data modeling, integration, ETL processes, and database design, all the way through to the creation of data visualizations and dashboards. The Database Administrator will collaborate and lead communications with key stakeholders across the School to help them better understand diverse and complex data needs, ensuring that the data warehouse serves as a robust, scalable foundation for data-driven decision-making at the School of Government.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's or Bachelors and 0-2 years' experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience in data architecture, data warehousing, or business intelligence, with a proven track record in designing and implementing complex data solutions.
- Expertise in relational database management, including design, optimization, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and advanced MySQL operations (stored procedures, syntax, data manipulation).
- Expertise in ETL processes and tools (e.g., Informatica, Talend, SSIS, or custom scripts).
- Proficiency in visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, etc.), with hands-on experience creating dashboards and reports.
- Knowledge of cloud data platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform)
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience in higher education or similar complex, data-rich environments.
- Experience with enterprise repository tools, data modeling tools, data mapping tools, master data management, data quality, data catalogs, and data profiling tools.
- Working knowledge of PHP or Python for API integration and custom scripts
- Familiarity with MS Power Automate or other workflow automation tools for data processing.
- Experience working with data governance, compliance standards, and ensuring data privacy in accordance with legal and industry regulations.
- Master's in computer science preferred
