Emergency Response Specialist

SUMMARY

Works under general supervision and performs assigned emergency response services tasks from detailed instructions, established policies and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participates as a member of the emergency response unit in providing fire suppression and prevention services, medical services, hazardous spill response and specialized rescue operations such as high angle technical rescues, confined space rescues in accordance with NFPA, Federal, State and local standards.
  • May participate in the ICC and may act as the IC for a facility or unit and may assist in maintaining inventory and storage of hazardous materials.
  • Conducts regular inspections of plant and equipment to detect potential fire and safety hazards and reports such conditions so that corrective action can be taken.
  • Follows standard practices as part of the Fire and Emergency Response Services team.
  • Assists in investigations of all alarms, fires and other emergency response incidents to determine root causes and development of corrective actions.
  • Participates in compiling, verifying and correlating data related to emergency response issues.
  • Assists in evaluating confined space permits and hot work permits for the facility and assists in inspections to ensure compliance with the organization's policies, procedures, regulations and standards related to hazardous sites.
  • Operates and maintains emergency response vehicles.
  • Perform administrative duties to track completion of training, scheduling of classes and resources, compile and prepare statistics information on training program status.
  • Provide coaching, reinforcement of safety policy and procedures in cooperation with Safety department and facility departments.
  • Provide safety visibility, consistency, and observations throughout the facility to ensure training is effective.
  • Assume duties of other Safety Specialist Department members as needed during sickness, vacation, and other department absences.
  • Leads monthly ERT training for assigned shift
  • Attends and Leads annual training, which may be offsite, to include rescue, hazmat, and fire

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates degree in a directly related technical field and 3 - 5 years progressive experience or high school diploma with 5 - 7 years progressive experience
  • Must have or achieve certifications for Fire Fighting, Rescue Services, and Hazmat
    Technician Level and other specialized training within 12 - months of hire.
  • At minimum, must have National Registry & Louisiana EMT certification. Paramedic level preferred.
  • Requires skills necessary to educate and train employees in general health and safety principles and techniques.
  • Must be a self-starter, work well with others, ability to multitask, attention to detail, and good communication skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as normally based in an office. Some of the work may be required in the operating units which can require usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, etc. May also result in exposure to outside elements and may require usage of stairs and elevators. Travel including air travel or auto travel may occasionally be required.
