About the Job

Position Overview
The University of Minnesota's (UMN) Affect, Cognition, and Computation (ACC) Lab seeks a candidate to fill one Research Professional 5 - Educational Research position. The position will primarily focus on building large datasets and developing algorithms to detect cognitive/affective states during mathematical learning.

The Research Professional 5 - Educational Research will be a full-time, 12-month employee of the University of Minnesota. The position will work closely with and be supervised by Dr. Caitlin Mills in the Department of Educational Psychology.

The Research Professional 5 - Educational Research should be committed to producing original research and publishing their work in highly ranked conference proceedings and journals (as appropriate). The PI of this project is committed to the professional development of the Research Professional 5 - Educational Research and will provide resources to support professional development including participation in professional conferences.

This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager. All UMN employees are expected to follow applicable public health and safety procedures.

Job Responsibilities

Research (100%)

  • Conducting studies related to mind wandering
  • Manage and contribute to large databases
  • Conduct R&D work with AI tools
  • Work with educational technology companies to analyze engagement in their platforms
  • Contribute to theoretical and methodological research in the learning analytics domain by developing new techniques for analyzing cognitive states.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in computer science, psychology, learning analytics or related field and one or more years of research experience
  • Experience with learning analytics or machine learning research, as well as eye tracking expertise
  • Proficiency with managing data sets.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Strong professional writing skills, including research reports, peer-reviewed research articles, or other print and electronic publications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in collaborating as a member of a larger research team
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations

The Department of Educational Psychology provides training in the cognitive, emotional, and social learning processes that underlie education and human development across the lifespan, including: the psychological foundations of education, quantitative methods in education, the practice and science of counseling psychology, school psychology, and special education. Faculty and students provide leadership and consultation to the state, nation, and international community. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: The salary range for this position is $71,000 - $75,000. Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.
