The Digital Engagement unit within University Communications focuses on fostering meaningful connections between the University and its constituents through digital channels. This includes strategy and execution across email marketing, web content, and paid placements to build awareness, increase engagement, and drive action among targeted audiences. |
Primary Purpose of Position |
As a senior leader within University Communications, the Director of Digital Engagement sets the vision and strategy for
UNC Charlotte's digital ecosystem, spanning web, email, and digital marketing platforms. This role leads a multidisciplinary team and serves as a key driver of the University's multi-phase website redesign initiative, as well as ongoing maintenance. Combining leadership, cross-channel strategy, and technical fluency, the Director ensures that all digital communications are cohesive, user-centered, and aligned with the University's mission, values, and strategic goals. They oversee governance and performance of high-priority marketing content, guide platform-wide enhancements, and lead the institution's email and digital marketing strategies to elevate engagement, alignment, and impact. |
Summary of Position Responsibilities |
The Director of Digital Engagement leads
UNC Charlotte's digital communications strategy across web, email, and digital marketing platforms. This role sets the vision for user-centered, data-informed digital experiences that reflect the University's brand and advance institutional priorities. The Director oversees a multidisciplinary team and drives major initiatives, including
UNC
Charlotte's multi-phase website redesign and maintenance, while ensuring a cohesive, accessible, and integrated digital presence. This position also champions proactive content and campaign strategies, guiding the optimization of high-impact marketing pages and cross-campus email efforts to maximize engagement, consistency, and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set and lead the strategic vision for digital engagement-across web, email, and paid digital placements-to elevate UNC Charlotte's brand visibility, support strategic goals, and enhance the user experience for priority audiences.
- Oversee a high-performing digital engagement team, including specialists in web strategy, email marketing, and paid digital placements. Allocate resources, manage capacity, and ensure alignment with institutional priorities and project timelines.
- Lead the University's enterprise website redesign and CMS consolidation, ensuring brand consistency and audience-centered architecture across institutional sites.
- Establish a long-term content and performance strategy for marketing-critical webpages, ensuring they remain accurate, engaging, optimized for search, and aligned with evolving institutional needs.
- Direct the institution-wide email marketing strategy, overseeing campaign planning, performance measurement, segmentation, and platform governance to drive engagement and ensure strategic alignment across colleges and departments.
- Act as a senior liaison to campus partners, driving digital transformation through consultation, stakeholder engagement, training, and the development of governance resources that promote content quality, usability, and long-term sustainability.

Minimum Education/Experience |
- Bachelor's degree in communications, digital media, UX, marketing, or a related field and/or Master's degree in a relevant field.
- 8+ years of progressive experience in digital strategy, marketing, or communications, including team leadership and cross-platform oversight.
- 6+ years of experience managing content in WordPress, Drupal, or other enterprise-level CMS platforms.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience |
- Higher education or public-sector experience.
- Demonstrated success leading enterprise-scale digital initiatives, including web redesigns, CMS transitions, or cross-channel campaign strategy.
- Familiarity with driving web governance models and creating centralized digital frameworks.
- Experience overseeing complex digital platforms (WordPress, Drupal, enterprise CMS) and multi-channel campaigns.
- Experience collaborating with senior leadership and managing complex projects in a matrixed or decentralized environment.
- Deep understanding of UX principles, accessibility standards (WCAG), SEO, and analytics platforms.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage digital projects at scale.
- Familiarity with paid media strategy, search/display campaign planning, and CRM integration.
- Proven ability to lead digital transformation and manage cross-campus stakeholder relationships.
- Strong understanding of UX principles, accessibility standards (WCAG), and mobile-first design.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud or other similar CRMs.
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work in an agile, fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
- A strong, collaborative, and communicative work style.
- Experience using Monday.com or other project management software is preferred.
- Experience using Google Analytics/GA4 GTM and Google Search Console is a plus.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud.
