About the opportunity

SWCA's Pasadena Natural Resources Program is actively seeking an entry to mid-level biologist (HR Title = Natural Resources Technician) to join our multi-disciplinary team in Pasadena, California. This is a temporary, hourly position, and pay will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

In this role you will be expected to perform desktop resource assessments and web-based queries for native species throughout southern and central California. Work will involve utilizing a variety of online tools including ArcGIS Online, Survey123, CNDDB, FWS Critical Habitat Mapper, and Google Earth. This position will facilitate requests from clients to perform environmental support for utility work in a fast-paced environment working within a larger, collaborative team. This position will require phone and email communication with client. It will also intermittently require work beyond regular business hours. There is potential for cross training in this role for several programs that vary from biological review to coordination and support.

Our Pasadena office offers a unique work environment and specializes in Natural Resources, Cultural Resources, and Permitting.

The candidate could fill any of three staff-level roles based on skill and years of relevant experience:

  • Assistant Staff Biologist: Typically up to 1 year of relevant experience and expertise
  • Staff Biologist: Typically up to 2 years of relevant experience and expertise.

What you will accomplish

  • Answer phone/email requests for environmental support
  • Review email requests within an inbox requesting environmental support
  • Work within a client supported database which requires a background check
  • May be asked to use online biological support websites and mapping tools to assist in vegetation community determination and resource occurrence potential

Experience and qualifications for success

  • B.S. in biology, zoology, environmental studies, or a related subject area preferred
  • Preferred candidate will have proficiency in MS-Office, MS-Outlook, and Internet/Intranet technologies; ArcGIS, Survey123, Smartsheet and GoogleEarth familiarity a plus
  • Able to work independently and collaborate with a variety of colleagues and clients
  • Familiarity of with California environmental regulations; experience reviewing environmental documents and permits a plus
  • Must enjoy working in a fast-paced, cross-functional team environment while working on interesting and challenging projects with tight schedule
