DESCRIPTION:

The intern will work contingently with the Government Affairs team to further support the execution of priority items for the local, state and federal level.

The intern will participate in staff meetings, sit in on key health system meetings, and create deliverables that support the department. The Government Affairs Team will connect the intern to Henry Ford Health's Health Policy team, and the intern will have an opportunity to learn how advocacy work is translated into policy research at the state and local level. The intern will be responsible for assisting in the coordination of deliverables for meetings and drafting materials to further support other advocacy, administrative, or communication tasks.

GOALS FOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT:



  • Understanding the three P's: Policy, Politics and Process
  • Understanding how advocacy priorities are determined and executed
  • Develop strong communication and coordination skills


DUTIES:



  • Intern will report directly to Government Affairs team members for tasks and review of completed materials.
  • The day to day for the intern may vary based on department priority and need to respond to local, state and federal issues.
  • The intern will be assisting with:

    • Updating service area lists
    • Bios ( State/Federal Lawmakers, Detroit City Council election candidates, Detroit Mayoral election candidates)
    • Joining State Committee Sessions
    • Joining Detroit community meetings and assisting with event planning
    • Assist with internal deliverables ( i.e. presentation, news letters)
    • Lansing Lobby Day
    • Assist with execution of CBA community outreach




INTERNSHIP EXPECTATIONS:



  • Pursuing a degree in political science, public health, etc.
  • Driven to understand key health policy issues and advocacy (healthcare reimbursement, health insurance coverage, social determinants of health, health equity, quality of care etc.)
  • Strong writing ability
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the team to promote goals and objectives of the office.
