Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development. The Division of Student Affairs aids, directs, and informs students about services and programs that will expand students' educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom/off campus aspects of student life at ECSU, including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services, residential life; student activities; community standards; special programs and services; student health & counseling services and career services.
Description of Work
The Director for the Student Experience leads the planning and execution of Viking Voyage Orientation, and Week of Welcome ( WOW), ensuring a seamless transition experience for new students. The director plays a critical role in serving on the Parent & Family Weekend Task Force. The director is responsible for overseeing the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of the Viking Voyage Leaders ( VVL) to cultivate student leadership and peer mentoring opportunities. Additionally, the role involves co-managing SEAL's work-study student program with the Director for Leadership Development and Coordinator for Student Life, assisting with the Ad Astra Venue Reservations system, and developing, coordinating, and assessing First-Year Experience ( FYE) initiatives with the Office of Student Success and Retention that enhance student engagement, retention, and success.

This position also provides leadership and support for major university traditions, including Viking Showcase (Fall, Winter, Spring), Homecoming, Winter Homecoming, Viking Fest, and Founders Day Convocation and Weekend. The director will ensure that new and transfer students participate in the Pre-Alumni Association and remain engaged to learn about philanthropic opportunities in collaboration with the Director of Alumni Relations and Engagement. The Director will provide support to the Director for Leadership Development for civic engagement programs and initiatives with the support of the Coordinator for Student Life.

The Director collaborates with the Director for Leadership Development to develop and facilitate student leadership development training while encouraging students to attend to promote personal and professional growth. As the primary advisor for the Freshmen Class, the director supports student retention efforts, leadership development, and class-specific programming, including Freshmen Student Elections and Freshmen Showcase. Additionally, the director represents the Division of Student Affairs in university-wide activities and internal/external engagements as requested. The director will manage budgets as associated within the portfolio and have a fiscal responsibility to ensure funds are used to support the development and growth of students.

The Director is responsible for developing and maintaining a yearly calendar of events, workshops, and programming initiatives for new and transfer students that intertwine into the departmental calendar, ensuring timely communication and execution. The Director will establish, revised, and enforce operational policies, procedures, and standards to enhance program efficiency and effectiveness, coordinate data collection and assessment efforts to evaluate program impact, and provide administrative support to other areas within the Division of Student Affairs as needed. This position plays a critical role in fostering student success, strengthening Viking Pride, and enhancing the overall student experience at ECSU.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Possess a working knowledge of first year and transfer students to ensure their transition to a college setting through engagement activities, events, programs, and resources.

Demonstrate the ability to articulate the role that student leadership opportunities serve in supporting retention and the overall academic mission of the university for first year and transfer students.

Possess the ability to work with computer systems, knowledge and familiarity with building management and student organizational management software, Microsoft Office software, and assessment tools.

Possess a working knowledge of Campus Labs/Engage software, VisualZen Orientation software or equivalent.

Demonstrate an understanding of how the value of student engagement contributes to the success of college students.

Possess excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills; the ability to analyze complex issues and effectively plan and organize work; excellent oral and written communication skills and experience in and awareness of the sensitivity required when interacting with, supervising, and addressing the needs of a diverse community.

Demonstrate the proven ability to foster collaborative relationships across campus, work well with parents/families, and contribute to creating a distinctive residential program.
Minimum Training and Experience
Minimum training requires a Bachelor's degree (Master's in Student Affairs/Higher Education preferred) with at least two years of experience in positions of which responsibilities include student activities or other Student Affairs-higher education oriented areas; or a combination of education and experience in Higher Education.
